Engine Whine

Post by Edin430 » Sun Jul 25, 2010 10:21 pm

From time to time I get a bit of an engine whine coming from behind my head at low revs, mostly in first and second gear and below c.20mph.

It's sometimes not there at all, but then it's sometimes very noticeable (I wouldn't say 'loud').

Any ideas what it could be? Alternator? Belt?

Toyota 2zz Exige n/a 06 55.

Any oil staining around the gearbox? If it was a K series I'd say TADTS...

Is it the same pitch whether you're in first or second? Anything that sounds like a whine I would normally put down to gearbox rather than engine - differential, perhaps?

Cheers,

Alternator maybe? I know they can get noisy when they're on their way out - mine made a noise (not exactly a whine) for best part of a year before it gave up.

more testing tonight... first and second gear at low speeds when the engine is warming up are the worst - gets a lot better after a long drive.
