Rich
There are loads of great drives around there, Stay north of Skipton, west of Ripon and east of the M6, use the B and unclassified roads and enjoy.
Great roads in that area (or heading down there from the north):
B6277 Alston to Barnard Castle, great road over the moors, with snow poles to help work out where the road is going. Managed to overtake a sport bike on there a couple of months ago, that explains the type of road it is.
Unclassified road from Barnard Castle to Reeth, great road, my gf has named it the Harry Potter road, this due to several very interesting flying moments, try it, you'll understand.
B6160 Aysgarth to Kettlewell, overtaking is limited, but worth it if you get a clear run.
B6265Thresfield to Ripon.
Unclassified from Masham to Pateley Bridge via Lotfhouse.
In summary loads of great roads, stay north of Skipton, not much traffic, go north of Reeth, virtually no traffic at this time of the year.
I have driven alot of these roads in the last few years and rate them among the best there are, and they are neary as deserted as good Scottish roads. Only downside was sumping an A3 turbo a few years ago near Reeth, but that's what happens when you drive softly sprung Euro hatches.
Have fun
Giles
