Braided brake hoses + Fluid

Post by KennyT » Mon Jun 21, 2010 10:33 am

During the amazing trackday on Friday my brake pedal went pretty spongey, I'm using Alloy belled disks, Carbotech XP8's and RBF600 fluid.

The fluid has been in a while so too many heat cycles is probably the problem, I've just bought Stainless brake hoses and just about to buy some more RBF600 but wondering how much fluid I will need for the change? Will one 500ml bottle be enough?

I was looking at the Seloc Wiki guide for changing the lines and it seems to make it very complicated, I was planning on doing one corner at a time and just pump the pedal until the air was out and I started to get clean fluid through? Can't be too much more to it is there!?
I know about turning the fronts upside down and winding the rear piston in too.

Can anyone share their experiences with me!?

you will need 1 litre, more if you get trapped air.

I just did mine without a pressure bleeder and used less than 1/2 a litre.

I did do the trick where you pump the front pistons quite far out before hand and then push them in to displace any air in the caliper. Don't know if that specifically is what worked but pedal is fine.

rears took a fair bit of bleeding

It is possible to do it with half a litre but not if you want to actually change the fluid in the system too. It holds more than 500ml.

I'd make sure you have at least 1.5 litres if you've not done it before.

I've been using the Castrol SRF for the last 2.5 years of SOME track use. Never failed me yet :thumbsup

Do you not need to remove the front clam to change the front pipes?

I'm looking at the following guide for an S1 from Wiki Seloc and it says you need to drill a little slot out of the windscreen frame, thats ok:
http://www.elisenet.plus.com/BrakeHoses.htm

reading it again, it shouldn't be too big a job.

Ordered 3x 500ml bottles of RBF600 from opie, now all I need is a calliper wind back tool, Does anyone in the Aberdeen/Fife area have one I could borrow for the weekend?

Use thin pliers?

For reference, the tool Halfords sell DOES NOT fit S1 rear callipers.

Kenny

I've got a caliper wind back tool you're welcome to borrow. You'd need to pick it up tonight or first thing tomorrow morning though as I'm heading away for the weekend.
I'm in the centre of Aberdeen.

Cheers Neil that would be great. I'm at work in Huntly Street and live next to the Hilton tree tops in the west end, got the car so can pick it up any time, tonight would be best.

I'll PM you my phone number.
