Volcanic Ash cloud heading to the UK
Re: Volcanic Ash cloud heading to the UK
Kerry, for 5 quid they'll telephone DVLA or whoever is in charge of licenses now and confirm your license details. Last time that happened to me, I agreed to the 5 quid and then they never actually charged me for itkerryxeg wrote:I'm stuck in London, sounds like the ash might continue to cause problems tomorrow.![]()
If I could hire a car maybe I should just go and see what's happening at Silverstone. Unfortunately no licence with me.
Kerry

Silverstone on saturday is going to be great, qually and both Lotus Elise Trophy races, though the second one doesn't end until 18:00 or so. It looks like we're heading down early doors Saturday, staying for the races and then heading back north again - home around 00:00

Cheers,
Robin

Re: Volcanic Ash cloud heading to the UK
hmmm interesting, Avis certainly weren't offering to be helpful. Sounded like they wanted the driving licence for id as much as anything else.
Hope Silverstone goes well, I'll have to arrange my time better when I'm stuck down here.

Update from BAA/NATS
"All flights are suspended at BAA airports until at least 07.00 tomorrow morning, Friday 16 April.
The cloud of volcanic ash is now spreading across the UK and continues to travel south. In line with international civil aviation policy, no flights other than agreed emergencies are currently permitted in UK controlled airspace. We are advising passengers not to travel to BAA's airports until further notice, and to contact their airline for re-ticketing information.
NATS will make a further announcement at 20:00 today which will outline the situation through to 13:00 tomorrow. NATS will continue to review the situation at regular intervals and we will provide updates on when they anticipate opening the airspace."

Re: Volcanic Ash cloud heading to the UK
Can any of the plane spotter geeks explain why a little ash in the air is so bad that they've closed the country ?
Good site BTW bit strange to see Europe covered in planes yet none over the UK

Radio scotland explained that this happened back in the 80s , a 747 when threw a cloud of volcanic ash and all four engines stopped.

They can not take chances Jon, it has happened often in the past both with ash and torrential rain/ice shutting down the engines.
Normally than can get them restarted at lower altitudes, but not guaranteed, and the windscreen can get so sandblasted that the pilots can not even see out of it to land.

Tut, I'm just a bit gutted about not being able to get away. Hard to accept that the UK is closed on such a bright sunny clear day due to ash

Last eruption of the same volcano in the 1800's lasted for two years.
That could cause a bit of grief.

Re: Volcanic Ash cloud heading to the UK
isn't it also that when the ash mixes with moisture in the sky ( on the plane/ in the engine) it then pretty much acts like concrete?
everyone is complaining about the planes being grounded but i bet they would be complaining if they let them fly and thousands of people died.
