Removable steering wheel

Post by Nig The Stig » Mon Jan 04, 2010 3:20 pm

Has anyone done this to a S2 elise/Exige with the airbag steering wheel fitted?

If so how much and where did you get it done as I'm seriously considering doing it.

Cheers.

no clue about this at all, but is it even possible (unless you remove the airbag?)

Any airbag i've ever removed has involved me unplugging the car battery for 10 minutes to ensure it doesn't accidentally trigger.

With my old Mini (that had an airbag) there was an airbag 'removal kit' sold by some Mini specialists that plugged into the airbag connector to stop the airbag warning light constantly being on.

You will struggle, no dealer will touch it, there is a thread running over on pistonheads at the moment, and its pretty much a no go, well without spending huge amounts of money, and opening up a can of worms.

Thread in question;

I also understand that you cant buy the removable hub at the moment, the company that owned the patent stopped elise parts/elsie shop using it. I think Yvo at Elise shop is in the middle of designing a new one, and should be on sale later this year.

If I were you I would post on the LotusTalk.com website in the Interior/Exterior section.

All the US cars have airbags and half of the guys on there have swapped for a removeable steering wheel, so it obviously can be done.

Also, plenty of the US websites carry the hub adapter not just Eliseparts and it's their own brand therefore will still be in stock :thumbsup

p.s. I'm sure Ali has swapped one before.

Just spoke to Murray's who contacted Lotus Sport who said it can be done no problems, only thing is the airbag warning light will stay on but sure I could cope with that.

But does airbag warning light = MOT failure?

Need to watch insurance too - Insurers may refuse to pay out if the worst should happen as you are removing a standard safety feature.

Might do but I've still got 18 months till mot time. Benefit of removable steering wheel is its easier to get in and out.

And in the case of old S1s like mine that get left with the roof off, they are a highly visible theft deterrent (they don't know it's in the boot...)
