Driving an open top car can seriously damage your hearing!

Post by Andy G » Wed Oct 07, 2009 9:14 am

"What was that?", i hear you say?

My Dr sis told me after a run in the 111r that on any long road run, my hearing would be damaged - that got me thinking!

For those of you that think i'm mad to wear Shures when i drive read on

Convertibles 'bad for the ears'

Top down driving can be too noisy
Driving a convertible car can seriously damage your ears, experts have warned.

Cruising with the top down at speeds of 50-70mph (80-112km/h) exposes the ears to sound levels sometimes nearing those made by a pneumatic drill, they argue.

Long or repeated exposure to this noise of the engine, road, traffic and wind could cause permanent hearing loss, a US meeting of ENT experts was told.

Researchers said convertible drivers should consider wearing some form of ear protection, as motorcyclists do.

The research has been published in the journal Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery.

In the study, noise levels immediately to the left and right of the driver were measured while travelling at different speeds.

At 50, 60 and 70 miles per hour, the noise reached between 88 and 90 decibels - higher than the generally agreed 85 decibel threshold level at which permanent hearing damage becomes a risk.

Noise levels
A quiet room at night - 20 decibels
An ordinary spoken conversation - 60 decibels
A busy street - 70 decibels
Shouting - 80 decibels
A pneumatic drill - 110 decibels
Aircraft taking off - 130 decibels
Source: The Royal National Institute for Deaf People
The researchers repeated the test with a range of convertibles, on the same stretch of motorway, outside of rush hour, and found the same noise levels - around 90 decibels, with a high of 99 decibels.

But they also found motorists can cut the noise by rolling up the windows when driving with the top down.

This simple measure cut the level to 82 decibels.

Experts warned that the damage to hearing builds up gradually and the effects may not be noticed until years later, when it is too late.

Dr Mark Downs, of the Royal National Institute for Deaf People, said: "Noise-induced hearing loss is frequently preventable.

"Regular exposure to noise levels of 88-90 decibels when driving a convertible for several hours a day can lead to permanent hearing loss over time.

"By winding up the windows or wearing basic ear protection, such as earplugs, drivers of convertibles can still enjoy driving whilst protecting their hearing."

Very true,

i used to get laughed at when i took ear plugs to concerts so that i didn't get too high sound levels in my ears,
studied "the ear" and all about hearing loss when i did my audio engineering course and its scary how easily you can damage your ears.

on the bike i have an autocom system that has small speakers to play music in my helmet which reduces the wind noise getting into my ears but when i brought the bike down to middlesbrough last month i put ear plugs in as well cause it was only motorway.

so listen to andy and go buy some earphones!

(good article for a good plug) :thumbsup :damnfunny

Yup - even when not wearing foam-tipped in-ear earphones I wear earplugs in both Elises (and on the bike). Did a little experiment and used a cheapo DB meter in both cars - it flatlined at it's max level of 92dB in both my stripped and throttle-bodied S1 and Elaine's Stage 2 equipped 111R. So they are both comfortably more than 92dB.

I've got Elaine wearing earplugs for journeys of more than a few miles now - another benefit being that it actually improves the quality of the stereo - as decent earplugs don't just block up your ears to all frequencies, they just strip the most damaging.

My hearing is still reasonably decent, despite 10 years of live sound work and 7 years of a noisy Elise - just thanks to taking this sh*t seriously.

Well even after the wee shot in the car yesterday Andy, I came away thinking I'll need to keep the ear plugs I use on the bike.

Both myself and Nikki wear earplugs all the time in the Elise, if we hadn't I suspect 100K miles of use would have us both deaf by now . . .

I got proper custom moulded plugs made

http://www.hearingprotection.co.uk/

You can wear them for a whole day and not realise they are fitted which is key to actually using them . . .

Shug, i completely agree that live sound is what really makes you notice.

My mum suffers from hereditary tinitus and i seem to have got it passed to me. its not got serious yet but its constantly there, and made A lot worse if i don't use ear plugs or in ear headphones.

In reality, I don't think it really matters what we do something is going to harm us in some way.

Car stereos tend not to have headphone sockets too which is a bit irritating, and hearing passengers would be another issue...

On the headphone front, are Shures the way to go? I might try some next when my Sonys give up the ghost (though they are fine now). They are my 2nd pair of Sony phones and i'm pretty happy with them mind...

I was under the impression that hearing protection was illegal to wear in cars?

Elise noise is a luxury after thirty years of helicopters, and it also drowns out the Tinnitus that I have to live with 24 hours a day.

The Townshend quote was about wearing cans in studios - usually turned up to stupid levels (been there, done that). The earphones Andy are talking about sit in your ear like earplugs (with acoustic foam plugs) so you can listen at much reduced volume - totally different to the usual earbud style sh*te. The point is that they avoid the sort of damage that listening too loud can cause, because you don't have to.

I don't have a stereo in mine (dead weight and the car kills them soon enough if you use it properly) I have an MP3 Player and Shures.

Always used plugs/shures when I had the caterham. Also tried it with a half decent sound meter and IIRC at idle it wasn't far off 82db

I'd have to question how they could get away with that for proper protection - ie, not earmuffs that damp all sound, but proper earplugs that strip damaging frequencies.
