Running in.

Post by pete » Fri Aug 07, 2009 12:41 pm

Car is being run in. New bottom end.

Scholar recommend 5-600 miles below 4.5k and no strain on teh motor then an oil change.

Is that enough? I'm up to at least 600, all below 3.5k...

There's another school of running in that states "thrash it like a bitch and it'll be a faster engine"

I'd say 600 miles is fine mate - change the oil and gradually start raising your rev limit over the next few days.

Right. So no to oil change tonight then a track day tomorrow?

(Got Shures in the end, couldn't wait for the UEs to come back in stock. Thanks for the advice though.)

Depends how lucky you feel. I would, although with your luck recently... That said, everything will be bedded in by now - running in is just to get the tolerances sorted and everything seated properly.

Your call at the end of the day - if it was gonna let go, I'd have said it'd do it by now. If you decide to go for it, take it out for a run tonight after the oil change for an hour or two and get it up in the 5Krpm bracket just to put your mind at ease. Then give it some on the way over tomorrow (after a good long warm-up) and be extra vigilant about oil level when you get to KH.

Pete, lots of opinions on this, but the best that I have seen from respected sources is drive it like you would on back roads up to 2/3rds max revs, ie with lots of changes of gears, throttle and braking, as opposed to sitting at 4000rpm on a Motorway for hundreds of miles which does not achieve anything, especially bedding in the rings and bore surfaces.

Ah - yeah, running in should definitely not be done at static revs/load - pretty much everyone agrees on that... Still, modern engines aren't really that susceptible to being damaged by it, it was in the old days when bores and valve seats got honed on the run-in :)

As tut said, vary the load on the engine, short runs and build up the loading as you clock up the miles. Would definitely change the oil, chances are it's got a mineral based run in oil in it just now, don't do what I did and try running serious revs with that in it.

Thats the same advice I was given on my engine, although after the oil change didnt have the 'nads to go above 6krpm and only gave it 8k rpm after 1000miles.

I would have thought an oil change and gradually build up the revs would be the way to go.

I ran my 2-11 in very easy  and it's been tested at 242 at the hub = 278 at the wheels

I think the "thrash the living daylights out of it" school are talking race engines only. For road+track car where you might hope to get 75,000 plus miles out of the engine, you should run in a little more gently, up and down the rev range, don't labour the engine.

I would change oil+filter - might as well get rid of any swarf floating about in there ;-)

For a brand new K it can take up to 10K miles to completely loosen up, though obviously less so if you spend a lot of time at high RPM. A rebuilt one won't be so tight in the first place, but should still continue to loosen up over a couple of K I would expect. The kinder you are to it, the longer it will last, but the longer it will take to reach peak potential.

Cheers,
Robin

I ran mine in my filling it full of proper running in oil, then taking it pretty easy for the first 50 miles. After that, full throttle upto 3.5k revs and slowly increasing this upto 4.5k until i'd reached 500 miles. Oil and filter change is a must as there will be a lot of crud floating about.

I believe that using full throttle helps bed the piston rings into the liners better.

4000 miles in the last 2.5 weeks and no probs ;)

I'm taking advice on mechanical sympathy from Tut and Steve Weegie.

May god have mercy on my engine.
