Rattles and zingy noises

Post by james » Tue Jul 07, 2009 12:28 pm

For like, EVER (honest) :) my S2 intermittently has what for the life of me I thought was a "brake disk protection plate rubbing on the disc" type noise when going over rough B roads.

Obviously thats impossible, but there is a really annoying rattle cause by something lightweight - so not the door hinges (which also rattle) its like a coil of wire rattling on the floorpan essentially sounds like its coming from the NSF wheel.

Any ideas? I've had the inspection hatch off - nothing loose. Is there anything inside the passenger cill that could cause it?

Its annoying, probably like this posting. 8)

Ps how do you get into the cill, just remove the plastic cill protection covers?

does the noise change when you brake, steer, go over bumps etc?

i believe the cill is only accessible at either end of it - otherwise it would weaken the strength of it

it doesnt seem speed or really bump related and is persistant when it does start. Then next time its gone.

I know it's an S2 but doesn't sound too dissimilar to when one of the front wheel bearings began to go on my S1. I don't believe that this is a particularly common fault on S2s but may be worth jacking the car up and feeling for play.

It could be something under the seat that slides about - sometimes getting wedged for a while and thus making the sound go away. Try and remove the seats and have a look.

Sound echos around the elise in weird ways - sounds that appear to come from one place might come from anywhere!

Cheers,

I have carpetted the floor under the seats so its not that. I think theres something loose maybe around the suspension. Wheel bearings are fine.

mmmm just wondered if it was a common thing. Guess I will find it eventually.
