Probably not, but I'd like to go through the motions of clutching at every straw I can before accepting the inevitable

I had a leaking bleed valve on the top coolant rail (Old S1) and that was a pain as it didn't leak coolant, but as the system cooled it drew in air. I bled the bastid for ages and kept getting air until I figured it out. The thread was buggered so I used miles of PTFE been ok for about a year.... (Touches wood!)

Okay - wee update... Expansion bottle certainly cracked so new one on order. Had a sniff inside, no whiff of exhaust fumes. Water level was low (actually inside the tube at the bottom of the expansion bottle) but it's lost water consistently for years - matrix leak - and it's been sitting. So that's not out of the ordinary.

Will put on new expansion bottle, bleed the whole system like a b*stard (prolly flush through new coolant) and see if it repeats. Then sniffer test if needed...

Don't waste money on 10L of clean coolant - you'll need that when you do the head gasket ;-) Do the sniffer test first.

Cheers,

Positive news... Sealed the crack in the header tank and topped up & bled the coolant. Not a twitch on the run to Brighouse Bay. It got up as far as 92 when sitting idling after some pacey action, but that's fine. Rock solid for 2 days. Will keep an eye, but the level in the expansion tank was really low, so it might have sucked through an air bubble. Will still do a sniffer test when my new header tank arrives.

Might now get my thumb out and redweld the matrix - it can only be a tiny leak, so it should work...
