Hello again all you engineers... :D :D

Cheers Ninja for meeting up with me that time in Edinburgh.

I now need a structural engineer for another job, possibly similar to what Ninja did for Pete I think.

We want to knock a cupboard out of our dining room, and move the kitchen to create a dining kitchen. Have added this drawing I did to give a rough idea of what's involved.
Image
The cupboard is shown in the top corner, and the dotted red line is where I reckon the RSJs will need to go. We haven't actually got architects drawings yet, but we've sorted one out and hopefully will have the drawings within the month. We're looking to do the project in Jan/Feb, and want to ensure the plans/warrants are sorted in good time.

The kitchen will go along the top of the picture, and extend roughly halfway down the right hand wall.

The flat is top floor, with the cupboard walls extending below through the downstairs flats to the ground (ie original and supporting i would guess). The roof is flat rather than pitched.

Can anyone give any advice or tips on what'll need doing, either with taking walls out, or moving the kitchen?

TIA

Not sure if this helps, but the cupboard Tom is talking about is seriously structural looking, the walls of which look to be about 6inches thick :)

I'll be keeping an eye on this one, as Tom's doing something I'd thought about a while ago for my gaff :)

Tom,

What you looking for with the clear span and then T piece will be a hefty bit of ironwork if needed at all.

Would it be possible to design in a colum at the point where your two red dotted line meet - that would cut down on the required work by a huge amount.

Thought about a column, but it would be in the way. Any support in the middle of the room would interfere with the kitchen plans.....Cheers for the thoughts though :D

I'll leave it for the proper engineers - but that won't be a cheap solution as your introducing addtional loads along the beam. With a clear span of over 3m I would imagine that's going to be one chuncky bit of metal!

Good point.. :D the table pictured is a 6' x 3'. I put it that way round to make sure it would fit and not intrude in front of the laundry room door. There are leaves for the table which means when switched around will sit 6 either side of the table (assuming I actually have that many friends....  )
