DIY CCTV for your Lotus

Post by Sanjøy » Thu Jul 31, 2008 10:15 pm

Yes my secure carpark saga continues. Over there last month there was a 9 day period where 6 cars had windows put in and yobs nicked home burnt CD and left originals in cases and pound nuggest in ashtrays. School holidays and no doubt daring each other.

Spoke to the other resident to try to get them not to claim on their insurance as we all share the one postcode and I know what will happen come next year.

Anyhoo could not get my local friendly community rozzer to commit the video van for a few nights to scare them off so have ended up putting in my own CCTV.

Ingredients:
Old 'puter (P3, 384MB RAM)
Wifi USB stick
2 * USB Webcams
i-catcher Console software

The puter is pretty much maxing out its CPU so have told the software to sample at a low rate and only up it when it detect movement. If I rescue a P4 from somewhere I will use that.

The feed dump their data (movement only) to my home NAS box over the wifi and I have set it to archive after a certain period. Lots of features in the software.

Plan on moving the cameras about but cars in the carpark and don't fancy standing on them to position them perfectly just right.
When I have access will probably put a camera on each of the cars and setup "masks" which when moment is detected in them will email/SMS/ Net send(Sarah works from home on same LAN, cue her leaning over balcony and shouting in her best cockney "Do you f*cking want some").

I put up some HSE poster ref the CCTV being in there so happy that it is covered from that perspective and will be off to register the cams somewhere online. Tbh after watching some Dom Joly prog where he tried to get hold of the CCTV of himself on ~10 systems and could not and the rozzers refused to help I dont know how much time I will spend on it.

I would imagine this might not mean much to everyone so special SE login :)

Amazingly clear pictures :thumbsup Don't know much about CCTV systems but that seems fairly clever. Lotus Cam prob needs slight adjustment

excellent idea Andy -you could set up some sort of onscreen interface where there are cross hairs on screen and you press the space bar to fire!

Much better than my automatic halogen light combined with Sony Playstation 2 EyeToy, 'movement' detection software and my laptop system.

Pictures weren't really too clear, but then it was a cost effective solution, and since my car is outside, I did capture a nice sun down, street lights on, sun up effect when I tried it out :D

I may put it back into use in the winter...

Wish I had a nice huge in door garage with roller door :(

Moved the cams and also put in a P4 with 1GB of RAM. Much better frame rates now as CPU is not maxed. Solutions is almost done. Want better cameras now ....
