Valves do not need to be removed for a skim . . . keep up :)

Don't the valves stand proud of the head? I thought the milling machine would have caught them. Or is that only with high lift cams?

Once you split the cam ladder from the head, all the springs return to the valve up position.

I'm sure I've heard someone say that they can skim it with the cams fitted, but I would have thought this would lead to compromises ...

So you do need new cam oil seals and cam ladder gunk, but you can leave the valves assembled while skimming, so you don't need new valve stem oil seals unless you're planning on removing the valves for some other reason (porting/bigger valves, for example).

Cheers,
Robin

Ah - Now I understand. Remove the cams not the valves & cams.

Got it.

Cheers

Afternoon all,

Ok, parts plans are now rolling! When is everyone free to do this? If possible, next week would be good for me as i can either get the train to edinburgh or "borrow" my brothers car for a few days. I am in everyone elses hands however!

Mac, if we can do this at yours and you dont mind relocating the Cat upto domsport, the use of the pit would make that bottom pulley bolt much easier. I hear that Louise is a caterham fan so maybe having one in the garage will persuade Dom to get one ;)

As for parts, i have all the gaskets arriving tomorrow, except the water outlet elbow - pentland cant source (??) and machargs being difficult on that.... Also machargs are being difficult regarding the bottom pulley and bolt.... I was under the impression that these pulleys were standard across all the 1.8 K's, no? I just told the guy to look up an mgf 1.8.....

Stu is primed for skimming the head too!

As hannibal once said, I love it when a plan comes together 8)

Cheers,

Steve

"Who's stipid idea was it it bring Elephnats all the way up here?!?!"

Good luck, sounds like you are well on your way!

You don't need to disconnect the water elbow from the head, so don't fret about the gasket.

What is wrong with your pulley/bolt?

Pulley wasn't correctly lined up at some point in the past and now the "keys" have a fair bit of damage to the extent that bolting the two up correctly is a bit hit/miss.

Similar to IainT's issues a while back IIRC

Jeez, i just got a quote for a pulley at £138.55

Apparently the LGH100500 pulley that used to be £60 has been superseded by the LHG000010 pulley at twice the price.....

It's not the pulley - that can be cleaned up.

It's the bottom cog that needs replacing

I have an old pulley if you are stuck . . . I got a new on with the last new engine I bought . . . it's done a fair milage and I replaced it because the rubber layer looked cracked, but that may just be cosmetic . . . up to you . . . they key is fine on it . . .

Given the destruction that you can cause with pulley/bolt issues . . . make sure it's ok . . .

Ok, i have some parts now! More expected over the next few days as i was unable to get everything in the one place. Rover dealer kept muttering on about MLS gaskets so i said thanks but no thanks and ordered up Payen ones from a motor factor. Also, i plan on sticking a new themostat in while the head is in bits. Partco wanted a ludicrous ammount of money for an 82C one, so that's been ordered from elise parts. Got a few extra bits that were needing replaced from the cambelt change too.

So.... If anyone is interested.... Here's what i have bought and where from.

Rover Dealer

1 x PQS100840 - Alternator Belt
1 x YLX100140 - Alternator Link Adjuster Arm (noted stress fracture during cambelt change) (on order)
1 x PEF10010 - Thermostat Internal Seal
2 x CDU3858 - Thermostat Housing O-Rings
1 x WAM4243 - Crankshaft Bolt
1 x PET10042 - Head to Coolant Elbot Gasket (prob not needed)
1 x LHH100480 - Crankshaft to Cambelt drive gear
5 x LYR10031 - Exhaust Manifold Stud (on order)
5 x FX110041 - Exhaust Manifold Nut (on order)
1x WAM2293 - Head Bolt Set (on order)

Motor Factor

Payen Head Gasket (on order)
Payen Inlet Manifold Gasket (VVC) (on order)
Payen Exhaust Manifold Gasket (on order)
Set of Camshaft Seals (on order)
New Threadlock

Elise Parts

82c Thermostat (on order)

So, i'm still waiting for a good number of bits at the moment....

Mac, I need to give you a phone!
FD, I think my pulley will be sound, as the key is only slightly mashed. With a new drive gear it should be fine.
Dom, I'll keep you posted once all my bits arrive!
Woody, The more the merrier I say. Will keep you posted as to dates.

Cheers,

Steve
