Knockhill Trackdays

Post by mac » Tue Mar 28, 2006 7:21 am

Guys,

As those of you who were there yesterday know that we lost a fair bit of track time due to 2 elise getting stuck in the gravel traps nose first.

This led to Sasha making an announcement saying that towing eyes should be fitted from & rear. I spoke to her afterwards and the jist is that if you have towing eyes available then they should be fitted and not in the boot.

However, she made a vaild point that all the time lost was due to elise/exige being stuck and unable to remove due to the location of the towing eye.

As a club, who use and have a good relationship with Kh, I think all cars who are regulars at track events should look into purchasing a rear towing eye. The cost under £20 from eliseparts and can be fitted in a matter of minutes. Hopefully we would never require them but it shows that we are pro-active.

I'll be ordering two before the next track day.

They connect to either the left or right hand dome headed bolts on the undertray.

I'm going to speak to Lotus Motorsport before I commit to buying.

Cheers

Are they really strong enough (the bolts I mean) to stand up to being towed out of the gravel? After all, they're only there to hold the undertray up!

oops! Apologies for wasting everyone's last 15 minutes, but the KH man wanted to attach a towing cable to the right rear suspension and I politely declined. Had to wait a bit for him to get the 4x4 in, then actually get some traction.

Still, as a great man once said, if you haven't binned it in the gravel, you obviously weren't pushing!

Simon,

That bolt would be plenty strong enough, the question is, is the bit that it's threaded into design to take a lateral loading. It is one of the area where you can put axle stands or use as a lifting point, but the force are going the other way then

The bolts (once you replace the cheesy originals!) should be fine, even if they give, they will just snap as they are in single shear. The mounts are pretty hefty chunks of steel under there. If you are still worried get 2 to spread the load.

I have also been thinking about the front towing point (bored again!) how about a rose joint with a shackle through it? Much stronger and no problems with bending. Just need to find a rose joint at a sensible price now...

How was the gravel experience Greg? Was it wet, what happened?

Put me down for two towing eyes if the group buy goes ahead! :)

Yeah, fair point there. Assume the roof was on, so no towing with the roll bar.

I'd join in on any group buy.

It was for most of the soft S1 drivers, however myself and Mac managed to look the part and drive topless. :D

I'll have a rear tow eye if there's a group buy.
