photochop ;) ?
No, original Photo
hmmm

all I can think is small (Maglight) bulb wired in and conected to power or possibly magnesium fitted between the gap and wait for it to burn.

failing that you will have to let me in on how,
for something more impressive try a sparkler behind the plug on a black background ;) you could hang the plug from some fine wire/thread then rotate it a little so it doesn't look like it's just hanging :D
It was a very long time ago (circa 1977) but I seem to remember that it was a close up of the spark plug using available light over a couple of seconds. Probably a Mamiya C330 TLR on a tripod and cable release  I had Black card behind the spark plug with a tiny pin hole in it lined up with the spark plug electrodes (not an easy task using a TLR). During the timed exposure I let off a flash behind the black card and the flare is through the pinhole. I seem to recall that black and white film when overexposed by a very bright light could flare on the negative to a small degree. The shot is original and not retouched in any way. Took many rolls of film to get it right. Digital photography would have been a godsend back in those days.

I tried that floating in white space idea.

The following is a scanned copy of a 35mm Slide I took years ago.

Gary, from memory the gun was sitting upside down on a glass table. Probably a number of flashes from different directions, including up through the glass table. White background in the distance.

Using Slide film was hard in the fact that you cannot change the end result in any way. I seem to remember taking quite a few shots and varying the aperture to control exposure times. Again digital photography make this far easier and quicker.

All this is making me tempted to get an Digital SLR

Me and a friend were talking the other night about how the "hardcore photographers" in the old days must have had a very frustrating and expensive job. On the flipside, I can imagine when you get that great shot, you feel absolutely terrific :)

Are you serious about buying? I bet you would be able to take some crackers.
