mmmm..... can't agree with that Fergus.

A diesel is far away from any petrol engine, certainly from a K-series :)

In fact, I'd be very surprised if you'd be able to actually feel the difference in bhp from a plastic plenum to the aluminium plenum!

I've tried the options on my own car when I had the good old K-series. The ali plenum ended up in a corner being a useless heavy lump of erm.. ali :)

Do you have a proper 4-2-1 manifold? Makes a world of difference!

I was whining like you are now about the car being no fun to drive as I didn't have the skill to keep it alive all the time (Ask Shug)

I found a 4-2-1 and fitted that, now it's awesome! I have mid range back again!

Its alot more fun for the bog standard driver if the engine is a bit more flexible and forgiving, ok its not at 10/10ths of its performace but I can't cope with that anyway. I run out of skill at about 5/10ths...

What size is the Tomcat one? Don't supose you know the part number of the Tomcat throttle body? Think I might know of a tomcat being broken for spares.

Huge. 58mm.

It will need the cruise control chopping off and a throttle stop putting in, but its straight forward enough.

No idea of part numbers.

Wouldn't be much use on a standard engine then would it? I read in Practical Performance Car Magazine that any bigger than 52mm on a K-series would start losing power???

Dunno but it was cheap and doesn't stick like my placcy one.

Don't see how you would loose power, loose torque perhaps and shunt the power up the revs a bit more.

Your engine still standardish? Might give it a try. I was having a look at mine last night and there seems to be a tiny bit of play in the shaft...is there suppose to be a wee bit of play?? :?

Isn't the "tomcat" a rover 'T' series engine ?

if so it would be off a turbo

I have been looking at my throttle body alot (it sit's on my desk)and it really isn't a complicated peice of kit.
It's basically a tube with a flapper valve in it.
It also has lot's of tubes poking out of it.

so now the questions
  • what tubes are needed and what do they do (please be as graphic about this as possible)
  • how does it work is say you have 4 throttle bodies ?
  • how good a fit does the flapper valve have to be ?
  • is the injector mounted before or after the valve
  • does it need cooling.
  • ????

When your car is running again (I mean in a drivable condition) someone will answer your questions...

John Reid wrote:It doesnt do any harm going to the bigger size when you consider how much cheaper you can pick one up for..

Think mine is a "polished out" 56mm from a rover turbo, or tomcat or whatever.

Noops has one the same, much better than the std plastic one in anyones book. Much cheaper than a 52mm one from Elise parts..
It *DOES* harm to step out;

(a) it slows airflow
(b) it causes turbulence.

Ideally you want to sleeve the new TB to have the same I/D as the plenum, though a compromise will be to blend the two together over an inch or so in each direction, or get a smaller TB.

Can you not just take a 48mm alloy body, remove the butteryfly and spindle, bore it out, source/make a brass disc of suitable OD to replace the smaller one you took out?

If so, I'll happily pay someone with skillz and access to supplies to get mine reworked.

Cheers,
Robin
