I suspect this is a stupid idea but at the moment my daily driver is a Xsara HDi which part of me likes (dirt cheap, uses no fuel, can tow the trailer to the tip, can bolt the bikes to it and holds all the luggage we need, don't care it keeps getting scratched and dented). but part of me hates (barely capable of independent motion, appalling handling).
So I was thinking I could get a third car, something light, fun, quick and old for battering around in during the winter when let's face it the Elise isn't the most fun in the world to drive, maybe autotest. 1500 UKP. Thought about a 205 gti (some with cages knocking about for around that money). A 106 Rallye. MR2 Mk1. Xsara VTS (don't laugh, they are great value).
I can't fix cars though so it must just go, a bit of maintenance is to be w
expected but nothing too much.
Is this a stupid idea? Any other suggestions? Would I need insurance or could I drive it on my existing policy?

I quite fancied this but looks like it needs too much work (no keys. Why would I want him to give me spare parts?) and the fact he wants to swap it for another one would worry me. You have one, why swap it?

924 parts are ridiculous. Rediculously cheap anyway....
I got a complete engine head for £30. You can buy a mot failed spare car for less than £200. Even the consumable parts are Audi/VW or even Porsche are not too bad. Bodywork is galvanised, its classic insurance. they are old, so be picky but there are loads out there. Also the engine (The 2L one) is none interferance, a cam belt going will cost you £7 and less than an hour's work. You seem to be able to boil them, abuse them, ignore them and they can still be coaxed into life with a bit of cleaning and a new set of plugs.
