GUMSC Smokey and the Bandit Scatter Rally 6thNovember2007

Hello Folks,

Glasgow University Motorsport Club is pleased to announce that the inaugural Smokey and the Bandit Scatter will take place on Tuesday 6th November . Dust off those copies of Landranger 64, replace the batteries in the head torch and find a roamer.

The event will start at Luddon on Balmore Road (582 713) and finish at The Tickled Trout Inn on Boclair Road (573 727). Scrutineering will start at 19.15 (Due to start venue limitations - Please DO NOT arrive before this time!) and competitors must be signed on by 19.45. A driver's briefing will take place at 19.45 and navigation clues will be issued to all crews at 20.00.

Entry is a poultry £7. This is to cover prizes and permits.

Regs and entries available from myself but places are limited to so get them in quickly to avoid disappointment.

The usual Glasgow University Motorsport quirks apply so there will be bonus points for the following, Handle bar moustaches, Firebird decal's on cars and any other valiant efforts (at the organiser's discretion).

I might get my bandit gear on yet! If it starts around 8, then i should be able to make it....

I went to Glasgow Uni too, never knew there was such a club although I'm not sure how my 1970 VW Beetle would have fitted in...

This is a copy of the guide from our website/forum, probably best describes what a scatter rally is: its basically just orienteering in a car

Ive been doing them for three or four years now and they are great fun for navigator and driver.

"Scatter Rallying is the cheapest form of rallying in the UK. Forget roll cages, helmets and fireproof underwear, this is budget motor sport in the Corsa you borrowed from your dear old Mother, but sshh donâ€™t tell her.

Scatter rallies are usually held at night on open public roads so donâ€™t worry about racing lines and concentrate more on not putting your mumâ€™s car in a ditch. Itâ€™s all totally legal, and permits for events are awarded by the Motor Sport Association for the UK (MSA) and the routes are approved by the local Motor Sport Governor.

Itâ€™s less about pure speed and more about good navigation although you will have to get moving to get round enough points. You plot the eight figure grid co-ordinates using a roamer (wee plastic card which you can buy from GUMSC) and have to decide the fasted route between them. You can visit all of the co-ordinates if you want but only 75% can be counted so choose carefully as they are all worth different points, far away or difficult clues are worth more than close easy clues and you have to decide whether you can go far and get back on time.

At each co-ordinate there will be a clue for you to answer in order to prove you went there, this is usually a number on a telegraph post or an interesting sign. They arenâ€™t cryptic or anything daft like that as the emphasis is more to prove you drove there than how good you are at the Herald crossword.

There are penalties if you are late or if you get the clue wrong so be careful and no points for pranging the old dearâ€™s shopping motor.

The GUMSC calendar includes the Dukes of Hazzard Rally and the Star Wars Rally. Both are a light hearted evening of motor sport taking in some of the best roads in the local area and with excellent prizes up for grabs you better start begging mummy for that motor (Hint: call it a â€œtreasure huntâ€

if you're wanting to compete the clues get given out to the navigators at 8,

we need to do "scrutineering" by the latest at 7:35 so if you could be there for then (drivers briefing at 7:45) then you'd be more than welcome to take part

Sounds like there's a story there??? Was it the Lotus, Clio of Metro?

First off apologies for thread hijack.

Picture the scene Rigg street in stewarton at 16:30 I had just finished work and was preparing to cycle home, I was happy at getting out of work and being young I was showing off and had started doing a pedal wheelie down the street. Half way down I cut across the road to mount the pavement where I saw a ramp (dropped kerb) I decided to jump it

and timed it wrong. now is a good time to mention that I had over inflated my tyres to make the 7 miles home easier. I hit the kerb and the bike flew into the air.

this is where I found out that brakes and steering don't work when the bike is not on the ground,

but luckily enough a concrete lampost was there to stop me and in a vain attempt to stop my bike from being damaged I used my face to stop (no helmet either)

once I had emptied the pub (they all came outside to laugh at me

)and my leg worked sufficiantly enough to push my bent bike back to work and get a lift home and thats when my leg started to really hurt and I couldn't sit at peace. luckily my mother offered to take me to hospital but only after my old man had come home and she had made his dinner

and as we left I got a nosebleed. At hospital they told me to pinch my nose to stop the blood flow but all this did was make me choke on it.on the plus side this get's you prompt NHS service

a few X-rays on head and leg later the doctor informs me that I have broken my face and comes out with the best line ever "don't sneeze your face might cave in" and follows it up with "as long as it's only blood coming out thats ok your head has filled up with it, but if clear stuff comes out thats spinal fluid and bad" so off I go to the ward to have the cramp in my inner thigh rubbed by the hot nurse.
