Does anyone have experience with FREE mass email programs that would be willing to offer me some advice?
A site i'm developing needs to have a mass email newsletter and i'd like an external program to manage the database on top of mambo. Which one is good?
Am i right in thinking that Sanjoy will be of use?
What a boring thread for a thursday....

Think Sanjoy reached his limit of usefulness when he handed out the brollies at an autotest

Outsource it...
I have ended up cutting companies connections as they insist on sending mass mails from their primary internet link. Yup it is all opt in, yup the lists were bought and the people had ticked the box to be used but as soon as ppl start hitting the report spam button on gmail etc you provider will be contacted and once they get enough they will tell you to cease else face the chop else part of their IP range risks being spam blacklisted.
What sort of numbers we talking ?
Are you sure there is no Mambo plugin for this ?

I'm not the best IT wise, but my friend insists that there is no plug in. Its not for spam mailing....The emails will only be sent to those who have registered on the site and requested to be kept informed. As in a 'sign up for our email newsletter' box.
I have been told that i can keep track of all the email addresses manually, or use a newsletter program to create a database from which i can email...?

I have used LOTS of these programs, Mail King Pro was the best but not free (hardly any are).
One word of advice, get permission IN WRITING and WELL IN ADVANCE of the mailing, otherwise wave bye bye to whoever's net connection sends the mail.
How many addresses you sending to? And have they "opted in"?
Gary.

if you've got a handy linux box about, majordomo & postfix will do it for free.... If you dont know what linux is, buy a windows program - its easier

Don't waste your time - nobody reads "newsletters" anyway - in most cases the junk mail detection will file your newsletter next to wundercum and its friends anyway.
Cheers,
Robin

I agree, however there is more to mass mailing than newsletters, some tricks have amazing ROI and conversion rates...

I must remember to mention that to the folk that keep coming in here asking for new product that's been mentioned on our newsletter
They do work if they are targeted correctly and actually contain news & not just thinly disguised sales patter
