Exige S2 disintegrating at warp speed!

Post by Meenrod » Fri Jun 22, 2007 1:40 pm

Yo!

I'm just back from Le Mans and had a crap time. Weather was wet and cold and the race was boring. However, that's not what I wanted to share. More interesting is this-

Driving back home through France, I noticed that the Garmin GPS has a 'top speed recording function' and measures and records the terminal velocity of your trip... mmm, time for some fun me thinks! So I crank up the Exige on the next straight bit of French A-road and get the old girl up to about 140mph-ish, and sit there for a bit....

...next thing I know there is a loud <BANG> and the front indicator light unit has bounced up onto the bonnet grill and is flying about in the air flow still attached by it's wires. I pull over to investigate and discover that the retaining clip has broken, presumably under the pressure. I then notice that exactly the same has happened to both the smaller side indicator units and they are also hanging out with broken clips. I then spot that the front inner wheel arches have broken loose... and the mudflaps on both sides are hanging on by 1 clip each.... :|

Standing back in disbelief I then realise that the locking barrel in the petrol cap has worked it's way loose of the cap and is now hanging half out.

Crikey. If that's what happens with 5 mins driving at 140mph I can only imagine the pressure that true 200mph supercars have to deal with.

Good thing it's all covered by the warranty.

I did wonder, but closer inspection revealed no signs of tampering. I spoke to Bill Young at MMC and he didn't sound surprised asking if the road was bumpy, stating that clam flex can cause all of the above!

Yikes.

Reckon British manufacturers rely on us not exceeding twice the speed limit.

Same happened at Noble owners' day out at Millbrook - first guy to exceed 160 on the bowl found both the front clam fasteners breaking and the windscreen surround ripping out

The rest of us decided to skip that bit :)

Were you returning from Le Mans last night (on the Forth Road Bridge)with a long line of special cars including Ferrari's, 911's and a Lambo at about 8-8.15pm?? A mate spotted all the cars and called me to ask if there was a KH night or something on last night :)
