New car thoughts

Post by mrbennybennett » Mon Jun 11, 2007 8:34 pm

Its looking like following my crash last Sunday my Civic Type R is likely to be written off

But at least it means I can get a new car - it is a company car and my budget is around £16,000 to £17,000.

Only restriction is it has to be ideally a max of 12 month old and less than 5,000 miles on the clock

Think i will go down the hot hatch route again - any thoughts on what to get :?:

Focus ST2... If it were me anyway. Don't think you will be able to pick up a Golf GTI for that money or an Astra VXR.

Unless of course you stay with a CTR...

Golf GTi; more highly rated (in some mags) than VXR & ST. ST not liked for it's heavy feeing front end, and very thirsty engine. I have recently researched all these cars and ended up with the GTi. Shop about carefully and you'll get a 1-2 year old (with a few options on) for circa £17500. Or a brand new import for £17500, with a 16 week approx wait. If you do for a golf, don't go for the bigger 18" wheels, they are commonly reported to ruin the car's handling, and are something like 10KG per corner heavier

Had my golf nearly 2 months now, and really enjoying it. It is quick, fun and practical.. everything a hot hatch should be. Not quite as nuts as my renaultsport 172, but so far, much more reliable. Also proving to be more economical than my 1.8 astra sri was. Commuting through glasgow i'm getting low 30s mpg, and mid 30s on a country run, unless I really boot it, when it can drop below 20

I also found the golf to be about £300 cheaper per annum than VXR or ST for insurance. VW dealer service (Ingrams Ayr) has been superb.. so far.

I'd agree with Dom on the Golf. It is the car to go for, but you will struggle to get one with your criteria of £16-17K, less than a year old and with less than 5000 miles. Hence the Focus ST suggestion.

Fair point.

I spotted a 1 year old car with circa 10K on the clock, and about 2K of extras in autotrader from a private buyer for 17500.

I doubt you'll find a car with that low milage, but on a VW poss less of an issue. The biggest benefit of the VW in my eyes is the cost over 3 years; it will depreciate about half as much as the other options, and is cheaper to run (fuel, insurance etc). It was pushing my budget to go into VW, but once it to it, I'll be much better off after 3 years of ownership. (God I sound like an accountant  )

I know you said you were thinking of a hot hatch, but surely you could get a Subaru WRX for that kind of money.

Worth a thought ??

No need to go to Motorpoint and Euro imports for a cheap WRX. Dealer in Falkirk has a few brand new Uk spec ones for £16,995 on the road, including 12 months road tax. Would need to be quick at that price though!!

Still not sorted out with the insurance yet but i have been told that since I have been promoted after i got the CTR my budget might be up to £18,500  (the company buys the car outright)

Im thinking towards a Golf GTi or Focus ST. Would love an Soob or Evo but think that might get veetod by the boss
