It's an identity card by any other name.
I don't think I've ever *needed* the photo bit. I use different id to fly - normally passport. I don't carry licence - if I'm stopped I use my 7 days to present it.

I'm happy to lose the counterpart, which i do keep in my wallet as i have to produce it regularly (hire cars - avis requirement)

Way more positives than negatives for me with the plastic part. Use it regularly for flights, collecting items from the Post Office, Banks, Hiring Cars overseas, the list is endless. My paper counterpart barely sees the light of day so more than happy to shred it and pay a small fee for the convenience of plastic :?

Bugger, just paid £20 to replace it as they require it in Europe.
