We've used them extensively on runs but never to aid overtaking. Very useful for warning of obstructions etc.

Once got warned of a group of turkeys on the road

I could see one use in a group of 5 with our system. The leader would have one but purely for listening, no need to hold it or speak.

The rear car would only use it to say "back in line" to let you know that you were back in a group.

For that a range of about 0.5 miles would be needed.

I agree on the above. Been leading a few times now and it can be hard to keep track of the back end of the group. We had problems with the Edinburgh run when we lost people off the end.

I rekon on a group you need a max of three radios, one at front, one in middle and one at end.

Alternatively, make sure Pesky is the last car, you can see his car through walls :D

I can't see the point in radios at all. If people stick to the run etiquette suggestions (i.e. small groups, wait at junctions etc.) there should be absolutely no need for them.

I think waiting at junctions is the key bit. Must admit it also helps if each person has a copy of the route.
I remember a run last year in which I waited at the junction just off the Glenshee road only to see the car (a good bit) behind me flying past the junction and not noticing me

At the end of the day, we all have the same destination with no prizes for getting there first. I would much rather arrive in one piece, stress free, rather than frantically trying to keep the car in front in view and feeling guilt about marginal overtaking manoeuvres.

All that said, I am really looking forward to it and can't wait.

Reason 1.
Smokey and the Bandit.

Reason 2.
Convoy.

The defence rests.
