Would be great to have two SE on the grid!
I take it you would be in class B?!

Even better, two SE's with opposing views!

Yes, class B, but wouldn't want to put the so much money on the car (like 4 pot brakes and other top end bits).
The 4K would just be to do simple thing like gearbox work, rollcage, plumbed in fire extinguisher, electrical cut off, MOG seat, and some lother bits and bobs.

Now, Neil has been speaking with some sponsors, I haven't, so yes, I'll be looking for help ;)

I think most of us had the money we would have been on the grid last weekend.

I would go with mac on this one. Do what you have to get the car on the grid, I am sure you will love it and be competative.

Scotty C
That's how I see it. If I had the spare cash that's where I would be.
I also think getting the car prep'd to just get on the grid would be great but how long would it take to pi55 you off that you were not competitive? No one likes to loose and I guess it will be the same for you. Winning numbs the pain of the expense.

Even Fernando Alonso had to start somewhere, and he didn't win much initially. Then in time he got competitive, and the rest, as they say, is history...

One step at a time can numb the pain too ;-)

100% agree Campbell!

Also if you impress sponsorship may find you in the future. Worst case you'll learn loads, and have a great time. I'm sure there will be a fair amount of comradary in the pits which may also help you learn where to shave a few pounds of the Elise.

If you want to go on a driver weight reduction programme, i can help with that (PM).

And if you want a copy of Toca 3 to learn the tracks PM.

It strikes me that there are enough people in this community either running their own business, or in a position of sufficient influence in bigger outfits, to be able to put together some tangible help for would-be racers.

The trick might be pooling the resources and coordinating the help, ie the whole is worth more than the sum of the parts.

See there you go, a very good example of the more subtle forms of sponsorship available ;-)

Like myself in the Scottish Championships, I think that Neil wants to base it around his own car, drive it to the track and back, and compete in a standard car apart from the engine change. In fact we have virtually identical cars even down to the colour, at least until the S/C went in.

Unfortunately Sprints and Hillclimbs are not the same as racing, everytime I lined up I wanted to be on a race grid instead. However I did not have to spend a penny on my car to compete, and due to the points system, I could have ended up as overall Scottish Champion if I had not gone into hospital.

Ali acheived just one level below as Scottish Road Car Champion with a standard 111S.

I would have loved to have raced for the first time in the LoTRDC series as a swan song, but the cost involved plus the distances to be travelled, rule that out. I may not have been the most talented driver competing, but I would have been one of the most effective, with probably one of the most powerful cars, though I suppose without front splitters, rear wings, racing suspension etc, I would have been at the same disadvantage as Neil, but without being left on the straights.

However tis all wishful thinking.............

Plus I did not want to modify my car with roll bars, cutouts and built in fire extinguishers.

Cheers folks, woke up today, with a clear head. Mostly thanks to Campbell who, via the help of MSN, managed to help me get my head around a few things.

I have decided to enter anyway, without the massive spend to be competitive. I will go a halfway house, prep the car, and lose some weight (from me and the car) but enter with the attitude that if i have fun, and still beat the people that i think i should beat, then i will be happy. I will build up to race wins, and if that means waiting to see what happens with the regs after this year then so be it.

Obviously, if i do manage to secure a sponsor, then i can add the other things later ;)

4mil

P.S Andy, cheers for offer of Toca3, but i have it already. What i really need is someone to race me on it, with a few beers

P.P.S i have also lost 2 stone you cheecky barsteward

Neil,

I am really, really impressed. I reckon maturity and grip on reality are key features of successful sportspeople (as well as the single-minded desire to win, naturally!). You have now got all these traits coming through in spades.

So you have set yourself a totally achievable path and goal. No-one ever said it would be easy. But it is achievable :-)

Really looking forward to watching your story unfold!

Campbell

PS - now can I clean your car, that's got to be worth 2kg and 5bhp
