PC doesn't do the 'ipod shuffle'?

Post by Rory » Sun Jan 14, 2007 7:00 pm

Just tried to plug one of these little fellas into my USBs but my "computer says no" :?

PC asks for drivers...but no software comes with it, and it 'plugs and plays' on my 6 year old, slow-usb laptop fine :?

I knew I was too old to be feckin' about with things I don't understand

What's wrong with cassette tapes anyway...they did the job without all this nonsense :)

You need to download iTunes first - go visit the Apple Site. The lastest iTunes software may also update the software on yer ipod too

Aye Cal, I had already downloaded iTunes. It is on my pc and working fine, getting my cd's onto MP3 format.

Trouble is my pc asking for drivers for 'the thing' that is plugged into the USB, but afaik it is a plug 'n' play, as no software comes with it

Not sure your PC can see the iPod as a USB device when you have iTunes, but iTunes can sync (that's what I experience).

I ended up ditching iTunes and using WinAmp to sync and WMP11 for ripping to MP3. With WinAmp, no probs sync'ing so far

Morning Sanjoy, thanks for taking the time to reply. Here's my best shot at answering....
Exact error: Can't remember the exact wording, (am at work at the mo') but it basically says the device attached to the USB needs to have its drivers loaded from software, and do you want to automatically update these or do it from a location of your own choice......I have no software or drivers.
Kerklunk noise - didn't have my speakers on at the time  However NOTHING appears in 'My Computer' other than my fixed drives A (floppy) C D(CDRW) and E(DVD).
Used USB attachments: I have successfully used various USB game controllers before, with no problems at all.
Using same USB port: Tried the iPod shuffle in both USBs that I've used before, then the 3 others that I had never used before. I got zero response form the 'game' USB ports, and the 'give me drivers' response from the virgin USB ports.

Does this help?? I am way out my depth

Mine did similar when the g/f plugged in her MP3 player (Creative Nano) and I had to update the motherboard drivers. It also turned out that it was incompatible with the modem (!) and wouldn't connect when the modem was plugged it. I fixed it by plugging them both into a hub which solved the problem.

Dunno why but it works.

First things first, http://www.windowsupdate.com and get EVERYTHING. (Assuming your windows XP is legal!) while you are there no harm in goign to http://www.officeupdate.com and gettting all those updates should you use office.

First one might pick up some drivers that are missing. Not sure of these latest pods, possible they are USB2 only and you machine is USB 1 ?

Aye, my XP is totally legal and about 3 years old.
I don't use office.

The daft thing is, the ipod shuffle is recognised no bother by my 4 to 5 year old laptop, running what must be the first ever XP and with only USB 1.

I'll try the Windows updates tonight, thanks.

As for Richard's suggestions....I'll give it a go again with the modem unplugged...but as for updating the motherboard drivers.....err you lost me  I guess I need to find out the exact motherboard I've got then search for the manufacturers site, then download updated drivers?

FFS all I wanted to do was listen to some golden oldies on my walk to work
Time to dig out my Sony Walkman and get busy with the 'record' and 'pause' buttons in real-time.....
Anyone want to buy an unused ipod shuffle (2nd generation)?

USB modems and hubs are classics for causing conflicts with MP3 players. Definatley pull the modem if it's USB and see if that's the root.

Unfortunately the modem isn't USB, but the more advanced thingy (can't remember its proper name).

Well I got my XP updates, disconnected the modem and plugged the little blighter in again.

Noise from pc? Well, no "ta-da!" of success, more a "dum, dum, dum" of failure, and no error message.

I tried to install through 'Add Hardware Wizard' and saw the ipod in the hardware list (but beside a big yellow question mark). On continuing the result was:-
"The drivers for this device are not installed (Code 28 )"

If anyone is still following this, frankly rather dull thread, then first off thanks, and secondly...you must be a computer, a-hem, 'enthusiast', so is there anything else I can try before giving up?

I'll give the solver of this a pax lap in my CTR next time at KH....
