Roller garage door help (nlc)

Our garage door has started playing silly buggers especially when it's cold.

For some reason it only opens about 10 inches and then seems to get stuck. The only way to get it open is to "help" it by pulling on it and then it goes the rest of the way with no issue.

Anyone experienced this sort of issue? I believe it's designed to be maintenance free but is there anyway of lubricating the runners to stop this happening?

Is it the electric "Gliderol" type?

If so you need to make sure the spring tension is right (the motor should make the same noise going up as it does down - if not the motor is working too hard), the spring takes most of the weight of the rolling, and over time they stretch a bit. It's very easy fix but is a 2 man job. (Pal tried it single handed and well it did not end).

You can also get a problem if it is not absolutely level as over time it "slides" to the lower end. If so you can tell by looking at it and you can fix it by brute force.

(To retension the spring you need to hold the door, undo the red handle near teh spindle WHILST HOLDING THE DOOR then spin the door round. If you aren't holding the door it unravels in the same way a deconstructed tape measure does.

Thanks for that Pete. Not 100% sure what make it is but the polish trick seems to have worked wonders and it's not happened again since.

Very apt thread for me as I have similar issues as Lord Ed albeit less frequent.

So Mr sheen polish?

Or would silicone spray be similarly effective?

My main issue is a hell of a squealing noise when the door is travelling in either direction.

I spoke too soon.....

Now it seems completely knackered and I think it needs the motor replaced.

Door is a Securoglide. Anyone know of anyone good in the central belt who aren't too expensive?

I have a similar system but made by Hormann. The motor on my system has a calibration cycle which you run through as part of the setup. In operation if it detects more resistance than it saw in the calibration, it stops. So any changes to the alignment of the tracks etc can cause the motor to stop.

Alternatively your motor could have been on it's last legs and has gone, you could test the motor by disengaging the drive to the door. I have replaced a motor, wasn't very difficult, cost around £100. Can you get a replacement?

Not sure I want to tackle changing the motor myself. Hopefully that's all it needs.

First quote to replace motor is £675 + VAT

After I picked myself up off the floor I've managed to work out that the tube motors are made by a company called Somfy. Lots listed on Ebay for circa £150 so that price is taking the pi$$!

I've had a look at the installation instructions:

and it seems fairly straight forward. As most of the difficult stuff has already been done do we think I should tackle this myself?!
