:thumbsup Thanks Graeme
My broadband can be slow loading pages at times so I might give it a whirl and see what happens.

Been using Googles DNS for a while, lots DDoS attacks are just chucking traffic at the DNS servers on these days.

Whats the internet routing table size these days Graeme?

Thanks Graeme. Bulk of your explanation is familiar, but wanted to check detail before I did any tinkering ;-)

I remember the heady days of setting up and supporting such stuff for banks of PCs at Logica. Life was much simpler then...

Well, I can get to every internet site, so I assume my router has the routing table for the whole entire internet loaded... lets see, yup, found it:

*/0.0.0.0 -> ppp0

*adopts philosophical pose* If any one router had a routing table for the whole internet, would it still be the internet?

*adopts linguistic pose* Would the internet still be the internet, or would the router still be the internet?

Or,

Would the routing table still be the internet?

BTW, I suspect Sanjoy is referring to the (e)BGP table in this context. I don't know how big they are, but once upon a time routers ran out of routing table memory and I don't suppose they do any more as memory has grown faster than the number of nodes perceived in the BGP topology and, of course, BGP itself came along; of course the true total number of nodes is much larger, but BGP hides them from you. I think routers running out of routing memory was an OSPF thing ... though never having been involved in internet routing, I don't actually know that OSPF was ever deployed across the internet.

Cheers,
Robin

The Internet is such an integral part of life worldwide now, that the collapse of it would probably have more effect than almost any other catastrophe outside of a nuclear war or massive asteroid strike.

Not that we would be able to discuss it of course, or use eBay and Amazon.

Inherent design of the Internet, from its inception as the US Miltary DARPAnet, means that collapse is unlikely.

The very topic of routers represents one of its fundamental strengths - an ability to work around failures.

Clever stuff.
