I think the very fact that there are lots of diesel owners on a forum dedicated to probably the best drivers cars in the world proves that your point is complete tosh.

Look, I have a dismal pickup, not because I love dismals, but because petrol pickups are somewhat scarce and the fuel bills would be horrific , that does not mean however, I like it.

as for Audi's, as a road car, they are plenty fast enough for UK roads, yes, they are not Elise, but then again, the fact we all have other cars appart from the Elise kind of makes that point.

You do know that the diesel car costs more over the equivalent petrol model. Based on the average millage it can take 3 years to be justified as the cheaper choice.

The choice between modern petrol vs modern diesel is almost entirely subjective now.

I think Paul's (ruadh's) post summed it all up best.

Plus we owe our continued ability to own and run an Elise over the last 8 years to the frugality - but also the contrasting drive style - of now two diesels. I don't actually care what anyone else has to say on the matter.

Although I am very aware that the latest gen petrols can now give diesels a run for their money in total cost of ownership terms, and that the growing use of turbo tech in new petrols starts to answer the lazy torque advantage too. Our next barge may yet be petrol...but far too early to say.

Oh, and we do wish we had been able to get a MINI Cooper Clubman diesel...rather than petrol...

It's not 'the message' it's YOUR OPINION and as such it does not make me wrong if I don't agree with it.

Regarding the car you drive, my point was you say that someone who has an interest in cars would not choose diesel over petrol. Yet you have chosen a car which has rivals which match it in every other measurable way, and beat it for handling.

Why is it ok for a petrolhead to compromise on handling but not on the type of fuel it uses?

Every car has some compromises, and maybe you just like blingy headlights, but I'd presume you chose your car because the set of strengths/compromises it has are the ones that suit your needs/wants best.

Gareth hit the nail on the head I think, there has to be a happy medium. There are many possible paths to take between the ultimate driver focused car and the pure appliance transport, most of us have to make a compromise and choose which path to take and also how far to travel along that path.

There are some excellent drivers diesels out there and I'd suggest a Navara and an A5 are not the pick of the bunch.

Car enthusiasts can choose diesel and still have fun.

Cars are a compromise, engines however, don't have to be, unless your counting fuel consumption.

My point is that if you ignore mpg, nobody would ever pick a dismal, dynamically, petrol wins hands down in every respect.

What you don't see is how someone can have an opinion different to yours.
FWIW I am with you on the petrol/diesel argument I don't rate diesel and given the choice I would always buy petrol but that is probably down to my historical prejudice rather than any rational argument based on fact.
I have driven a number of diesels over the years and there is no denying they are getting much better and they can probably be as good as if not better than their petrol counterparts in some iterations.
Personally I would grudge paying more to buy them and more to fuel them and then having to cover intergalactic mileage to get the extra expense back but I wouldn't argue that they are a compromise over petrol in every respect
