Re: Winter shed at auction
I learned a lot in my boss's old SD1. One of the last, 3500 V8's, VDP Vitesse, dark blue B reg jobbie, with IMSMW only 3 forward speeds on the auto box.
Fastest I have ever gone on a public highway. Just shy of an indicated 5 Tuts less that the book top tut of an S2 Exige. Absolutely fearsome experience, only surpassed by a 360 spin on the back road from Dyce to Balmedie near the Carle lumber yard due to unexpected kickdown on exit of a fairly rapid bend. There before the grace of God. Put me off Auto cars for a good 20 years. Boss never suspected a thing due to the fact the cars brown seats hid a myriad of experiences. A proper car, but not one I would buy now....
It was replaced in 87 with a Ford Granada wide mouthed frog, which my colleague rolled onto its roof outside of Tarves one wintry night. It took Ford near on 6 months to fix the Granada during which time the company hired some nice cars all of which I got to drive.
Merc's, BMW's and Fords a plenty, but the stand out at the time was an MG Maestro Turbo. That was an animal of a car. Developed rust as fast as it accelerated on the turbo but a really great, exciting and viceral car to drive on full chat.
Company went bust at the end of 88. Ran out of cash (British Caledonian Helicopters).
Ah the sweet smell of nostalgia.....

Two of their pilots came over to Bristows in Jan '88, and were flying the S76 with me, Chris Powell and Chris Hunt.martins wrote: Company went bust at the end of 88. Ran out of cash (British Caledonian Helicopters).

Chris Powell rings a bell. I liked the S76. Smalland relatively sporty, at least compared to the other N Sea fare of the day....Two of their pilots came over to Bristows in Jan '88, and were flying the S76 with me, Chris Powell and Chris Hunt.
I was the errand boy back then. Cut the grass, deliver the mail, make the coffee, drive the boss around etc. As you will be well aware, a few of the pilots back then came with attitude and did not really want to take on the tea boy so I did not know many of them that well. There were some exceptions though. Tony xxxxxx the chief pilot was OK. Might have something to do with him landing a Bell 214 in a park and me being the one to drive him back and forth to the head doctor so he could get back in the seat. Could tell you a story anout Tony XXXXX involving a sex show, gorilla, banana and naked couple on stage.....maybe another time.......Another was David Maxwell. Ex Navy. Yougest Captain/Training Caprtain B'Cal ever had until he tried to land a S61 with the wheels up whilst training a new pilot. Would have got away with it had the engineers not noticed the bust light and dented scraped belly..He lost a stripe but then bailed and went fixed wing. He is now a training pilot on 777's.
Did you by any chance ever bump into a girl by the name of Pam Gatt during your time at Bristow's? she worked either in the office of check-in?
Ah the days...

Trying to remember Tony's surname. Chris Powell was a grizzled, grey coloured, chain smoker, one year older than me.
Was Pam Gatt her married name, our secretary was a Pam Smith?

Tony Dando.Trying to remember Tony's surname.
Found this online.

Parked in a field near Balmedie. Gearbox warning light. When stripped down they found that they were within seconds of the whole thing coming apart. Different plane, different era, same problem.
If either of us remember. Next SIDC day ask me about Tony and the gorilla. His part in the story is funny as he was the chief pilot but the guy with the real skeleton in his closet is Graham Brodie.....
