Elise S1

Post by tut » Wed Mar 06, 2013 2:05 pm

I posted up John Duthie's car some time ago, but the fact that it has had eight owners put off buyers on here.

He listed it on eBay and has had six buyers from Europe, but they either wanted him to ship it over, or meet them at Dover which was not on.

I will put the details up in Classifieds if anybody is interested, and it would be below the advertised price for any S-er.

I'd have thought that most of these cars have had a good few owners by now. Fairly sure mine has 6 or so - maybe I was really naive when I bought it almost 6 years ago ;)
'16 MINI Cooper S - Family fun hatch
'98 Lotus Elise - Fun day car
'04 Maserati Coupe GT - Manual, v8, Italian...
'18 Mazda Mx5 - The wife's, so naturally my daily
'19 Ducati Monster 797 - Baby bike bike

My first Elise which I bought s/h in April 2004 and wrote off in Dec 2004. According to the engineer who inspected it after I wrote it off it needed a new chassis; the n/side rear wheel was pushed onto the chassis and the 'chassis siderail endflange' was distorted. All documented on SELOC at the time.

I wanted it repaired but the ins company said no. I have pics of the damage somewhere and I know that the chassis wasn't replaced before it went back on the road. It also had steel wheels and 12 spoke rimstocks.

Paid £10750 for it, the insurance paid out £12975 and my renewal quote went down despite them paying out £13k to me three months prior! Crazy.

No good for Europe as it's a Cat D, stricter rules there about repairs, besides which it was never repaired properly!

Thanks Henry, nothing of that is in the folder of history and servicing, and John would have not known about it, but I will remove it from our Classifieds now as it is a no go for any of our members.

Ps. If you can find the photos could you mail them to me please.

Cat d is not usually that bad though, pics will help but easy to check if the car is okay.

There is no way the car should have been a CAT D if it was suspected that there was chassis damage, it should have been a CAT B and not allowed on the road again until fitted with a new chassis and then inspected.

N1 had no chassis damage, but because the insurance assessor suspected it could have, it was given a CAT B which meant I could not buy it back, and was stitched up when I tried to bid for it via a licenced buyer.

John has now sold the car to a local buyer for the asking price.
