Saxo VTR would be a great choice.
I know they're driven by the max power brigade but they're great fun (and cheap) cars. Pretty much the same as a VTS/106GTi just a little slower and easier on the wallet. He'd still be able to indulge in the delights of lift-off oversteer and would be fairly easily modified if he wanted to go down that route. At 19 he should really think himself bloody lucky he can have a car of his own at all.

Damn right... I was driving a clapped Fiat Panda at that age.... Remember drafting a range rover on the M80 to get the speedo to read 90 ('twas a 4 speeder too, so probably turning 14,000rpm) 5-up (two being 15st+ rugby players)

Gave it to my sister as a runabout after I'd done with it and the rear subframe totally collapsed the week after!

When I was a lad etc... :) I had a 1990 Mini Cooper (still have it) he's financing it himself but I still think he should walk.

VTR, cool choice - don't think he even knows what lift-off oversteer is though Si!

Or how about a 106 rallye - it's got the lightweight thing going on after all, and is a lot of fun for the money (and faster than a VTR).

If he's a pose monkey (as insinuated) I don't think windy up windows and steel wheels are gonna make him moist.... Much as I admire the wee car for it's purity.

I got my first car aged 14. :drive Was onto my third by the time I was 17. First two cars cost £40 each, and took a lot of abuse, round a farm yard, and in some fields. S'pose better than abusing anything else around the farm :sheeplove

Shi*ty mustard yellow, painted it gloss black :D :D left to ed and I by an old family friend who died. Then, when 14, we bought a Yugo for £100 complete with kickass ish stereo :D . think it was a 35. sweet set of wheels
used to rally them round the farms with a friend(bit younger than us) in his white escort. we were v. jealous. white escorts were wicked back then.
