Weird S2 suspension phenomenon

Post by Wee Leo » Tue Sep 02, 2008 5:08 pm

I noticed a strange suspension phenomenon after a long drive at the weekend. After the trip I pushed down on the back of the car and the suspension seemed to have locked. Almost no downwards movement at all. A few hours later I checked once again and I was able to push the back of the car up and down as normal. Could it be temperature related?

I had driven from Dresden back to Berlin on the Autobahn, sitting between 110 and 140mph and the ambient temperature was about 25degC. My car is a 2001 S2 running 172PS. The suspension is standard apart from 20mm spacers and all the rubber bushes have been replaced with nylatron bushes.

Ha anyone experienced this before?

Cheers,

James.

Just in case any one is interested - I've finally had this problem solved. It turns out the Nylatron wishbone bushes had ran out of lubrication and were locking when subject to about 40 mins of normal suspension vibration when driving. Re-lubricating the bushes worked for a while, but the suspension did not fully lock, it completely restricted it's movement. To cut a long story short, I now have a new set of original lotus rubber bushes installed - and also a new set of Nitrons as part of the troubleshooting :-) The suspension now works great.

So the motto of this story is avoid the Nasty Nylatrons (well that was my experience)

And another thing, why do I now have to access this forum through a UK ip address? It was no problem a few months ago.

Hi - I must have missed your original posting - yes the life expectancy of the nylatrons is a lot lower - makes sense for racers that rebuild suspension annually and do a couple of 1,000 miles a year, but for road/track day use I think they're a waste of time and effort :-)

We've had a spate of spam attacks with auto-registrations and unpleasant porn/viagra/... posts filling up the board - at present a geographic IP address blockage has been our easiest way to prevent them from attacking. If you PM me your preferred IP address I think we can configure you as an exception so that you can continue to access board as before.

Cheers,
Robin
