Obviously Bloat is a fairly emotive subject in relation to large breeds but I personally think that being aware of how to minimise it's likeyhood and how to recognise the symptoms early enough and, equally importantly, making sure that your vet is familiar with the emergency surgical procedures required to treat it, then that's good enough for me.
Was just wondering what your opinion was, I think you're right, far better to be aware and manage properly, I think it's fairly commonly done in Australia and becoming more so in this country. I suppose if you are speying a bitch it doesn't take too much to have it done at the same time but i wouldn't do the proceedure alone.

Ohhhh, sooo cute!! Id love to get a dog, and so would Alan (hubby) but he's allergic so its either him or a dog.........

We have a 4 yr old cat and 7month old kitten though. Before we got the wee one, Id been at Alan for ages that I wanted a kitten and he kept saying no, then one lunchtime I got a phonecall saying I could get one, little did I know at that point he'd just bought an engine for 2 grand and the kitten was supposed to sweeten me up a bit!!

Im laughing now.........

How much food do they eat when fully grown if your pup is on 2.5kg per day?
I put a deposit down on another shar pei pup yesterday :D Should be fun
My pup was out for her 1st walk in the park today , think it tired her out as shes lying snoring beside me

great photos jim. do you keep them in a kennel?

must... resist.... posting.... more photos of my mutt!

I often take my dog out with my sisters great dane and its funny watching them - hektor (her great dane) has a paw the same size as my dogs head! Our dog Giles went into 'shut down' mode when Hektor ran towards him and then rolled down the hill

Beautiful pup Jim - top work fella :thumbsup

I'll refrain from making any lewd comments on the size of the testicles on that last pic

For once, I won't post any doggie pics, but instead, a wee story about my bonkers English Springer Spaniel, Harvey...

He developed a terrible limp in his hind right about 2 months back, gave the leg and paw a thorough inspection but my limited vet skills found nowt, so a visit to the doggie quack was needed. Transpired to be a dodgy knee (at only 3.5yrs old!!!) and he was given a week's course of anti-inflammatories to try to reduce pain & swelling. Next visit showed not enough of an improvement so he was booked in to have his cruciate ligament replaced, poor sod. So I now have a daft dug with a plastic knee!

Turns out to be due to lots of twisting & turning on rough ground, which springers do naturally

We are now about 4 weeks down the line and he's still limited to 2x 10mins walks daily ON THE LEAD which is a nightmare for this breed, I can assure you...

The joys!

Shadow is 4 yrs old and eats twice/day. He probably and goes through a 15kg bag of complete dog food / week plus has an 800g tin of chunky dog food bits per day.... plus absolutely anything else he can get his slobbery chops on :)

They have a fairly big indoor area to themselves with a BIG catflap thing into another outdoor area.. wiv a strong fence :)

Tut, I have had GSDs for the past 20 yrs I think. Great Danes and GSDs are a good combination in many ways since you only really have to train the GSD and the Dane will just do what it sees the GSD doing. Makes things nice and easy. The two Danes play together really well but Nero, the GSD, is a bit aloof and just watches whats going on. If they get too close to him in a boisterous manner he shows a full set of pointy teeth and they just zoom off in a different direction.

My previous Great Dane also managed to tear both his cruciate ligs in his back legs when he was 18 months. Bit of a financial disaster since I had decided that it was foolish to spend a fortune on pet insurance. An expensive 4k lesson well learned  The vet put a metal plate in Savos' back left leg that they usually used for fixating bones in horses. During his recuperation he jumped up when he heard the doorbell and bent the plate!! You can see in this pic that the vet decided just to leave it slightly bent. :blackeye
