Aw god knows mac I was just browsing the forums and so many people have said dizzy cap again and again its annoying though bloody embarrasing leaving work limp mode pulled over at side of the road trying to get revs up for it to move then switch off and on to reset it.

rather than an s2 cover - perhaps a proper rover one rather than the "personalised one" that the last guy fitted.

Still - I'm convinced that we need to remove the plugs from the equation

the rover spec ones, if it has a rubbish personalised cover on it I would replace that before getting an S2 cover (although I really want an S2 cover they look cool)

Scrappy, you should be able to pick up a rover one pretty easy as just about every rover from 1990 onwards was fitted with a k-series unless it's different MGF is a guarateed source but some scrappy's have elises in them but I am sure they will put the price up.

as for the plugs any good motor factors will have them.

Excellent mate Ill have a look tomorrow and get new plugs and see if that makes a difference then go for the original cap. I got a funny feeling it could be the plugs as my dad just pointed out the engine gets roasting and should evaporate all water near it especially when we cleaned it out yesterday not much water should have gathered. If the plugs still make it broke we will investigate further

Your car does not have a distributor so it won't be the "dizzy" cap.

You must buy the correct plugs for your car. The owner's handbook tells you what those are; if in doubt take the book with you to the motor factors, act dumb and ask them to help. 99% of them are knowledgeable and friendly, so don't be shy.

The water does evaporate but it's trapped in the void between the top of the spark plug and the plug on the lead, so it lives there as steam, then condenses when the engine cools (much like a still). It will, to a lesser extent, live on inside the well as the grip part of the plug lead forms a reasonable lid to the well.

No need to go mad with the shower sealant. Remove your plug cover, clean up the long edges, then run a bead down each of the long edges, then replace and let it set. The gaps at either end won't be so much of a problem (where the plug leads emerge).

All these engines have evaporation/condensation traps, even with the fancy new cover - get a lot of water in the engine bay, heat the engine up, then let it cool and there will always be moisture where you thought it couldn't possibly get to :-)

Mac's right - change the plugs *first*.

Cheers,
Robin
