How safe are our cars from theft?
How safe are our cars from theft?
Guys,
Been bugging me for a while..I got a better deal on insurance for an S than an S2 as the insurer reckoned the S was harder to steal.
How easy is it to steal (open and drive off) one of these later cars with the standard Cobra alarm armed. Anybody know? Any published comparisons?
Thanks & take care,

The locks are crap, but if you really wanted one you could slash the roof jump in and tow it away to get the imobiliser off when you have more time/less police interest.
I don't know what the Cobra system is like but for some systems you can buy blank keys and reprogram the ECU easily and quickly to accept them. In other words if you want it you will have it,
Just think what would you do if you lost your keys ?

I doubt they spend much time reading SE
Luckily I doubt many elises actually get stolen in the traditional sense - I know one or two have been stolen with the keys after burglaries, but I just don't think they're desirable enough to steal to order, and they're too visible to steal as runabouts.
Cheers,
Robin

For info.... publishing any ways to enter or obtain a car without keys is a sure fire way of putting premiums up.
I queried with a couple of insurers why they wanted a tracker on an early MkI MGZS180, when I already had a MkII ZS180 which didn't require a tracker. I managed to get a response from an underwriter. Basically, someone had posted on an enthusiasts forum how to get in to an early MkI without the key (albeit with a little bit of damage).... the underwriter even told us the method.. which I promptly checked. They were right.
MG then put a plate in the way to stop this access on later MkI's... but had it not been posted in the public domain, this specific insurer would not have required a tracker.
So, someone must check forums for this kinda stuff !!

I have no signature.
If it bothers you and/or your insurer get a tracker.
For my car parked in the drive I needed to have one fitted.
Dan picked my car up to take down to JPS and when in transit I got a phonecall from tracker to check the whereabouts of my car. As the keys weren't in the ignition but the car was moving it was coming up as being nicked.
Certainly puts your mind at rest and confirms the system works, won't stop it being nicked but hopefully some toe rag will get lifted and the car returned.

there was an Elise stolen in Holland a few weeks ago,
broken in the house and nicked keys and took car. (back after abandoned without fuel just a few miles from home :lol )
the good thing is that in a small community like ours, it was reported in all the forums, so practically unsellable.
new locks and alarmfobs paid for by the insurance.

I don't think anyone steals cars the old fashioned way anymore, they just nick the keys immobilisers are to much hassle, there are a few tricks out there for certain cars, (corsa springs to mind) in other words if someone really wants it they will get it, and this goes for everything not just your car, you can only make things more hassle for a prospective thief, as far as our we cars go and with recent things in london in mind vandalism is probably the biggest threat.
