Spoke to Dan at JPS, he's going to pick it up on Thursday night around 6. Top bloke.

Not too bothered to be honest... was wanting an excuse to get "something done" to the engine...

And he has a set in stock

New Cams?

So what has happened, has the pulley broken/worn off? Is that the timing belt in the bottom pic?

yes new cams but dont tell the missus

looks like the bolt lossened off ad the pulley was hanging on the belt.

The timing belts have melted there way through the case but it doesnt look as if they have dropped off the pulleys. There was not metalic clattering from the engine on the way home so I am reasonably confident there is no internal damage.

The black lump is melted plastic from the covers. The belt is still in reasonably good order.

I fear it may have caused internal damage. These are contact engines are they not?! :(

Dan was pretty sure it would be ok but there is still the possibility of it being totalled. Fingers crossed.

It'll be fine, else it wouldn't have run this far. You should get new cam covers and you'll need to replace the 22mm bolt that holds the pulley on, though, as sure as eggs is eggs, it will fail in the near future now that it has had the alternator drive pulley flailing about on it. Everything else should be OK though (the crankshaft timing gear won't have come off the crank - it's hard to get off anyway and the load from the belt will help keep it where it is.

DDtB's was barely more than finger tight when I undid it the other day. The manual says to torque to 205Nm. That huge torque is required to preload the bolt; no amount of thread lock will compensate for a failure to torque it up properly. Depressingly common, though ...

Cheers,
Robin

Wow. It was still running like that?

If it was running I would imagine you have been extremely lucky!!
If the belt had come off then it would have been clatter clatter bang but if it is still partially engauged it should be ok....

Indeed . . . 205Nm is very, very tight . . . you should be almost pulling the car off the ramps when torquing it up . . . threadlock is simply a final precaution . . . it should never be needed but may make the failure occur more slowly if the worst came to the worst.

As Lawrence says, who last had the pulley off, because as the bolt didn't break . . . it wasn't tightened properly . . .

If it's not grenaded then that's one of the luckiest things I've seen ;-)

can't believe noone has identified the true problem... if that photo showed what was sitting on the undertray, a whole load of sockets fell off your engine!

Would re-torqueing the bolt be a worthwhile maintenance task?

Re torque to a lower torque to check its tight looks to be a good idea. Repeatedly retorquing it the 205 could fatigue the bolt.

Scary pictures.
