Elise no more :-(

Post by IanD » Wed Sep 03, 2014 9:01 pm

Not good news, I managed to spin and crash my Elise while out on a run the end of July down near Cumnock. Ended up catching the front backwards along a hedge which then nudged rear into the hedge Wasn't a hard or fast impact so i was ok, car was driveable out the hedge and home but unfortunately some damage to both front and rear clams. Willowbrae have today quoted over £16K to fix the damage, so car will be an insurance written off.

Not sure the next steps. The Elise as a 2nd car didn't have daily use and wasn't getting used as much as I would like. Once insurance is sorted, think it unlikely an Elise will be the replacement for now, been browsing and researching various Porsche models same value as the Elise which are slightly more practical but might end up buying something really non sporty as my son is about to pass his test in a few weeks times. Bit ironic teenager son about to pass test yet it is the dad who crashes his car !!

It has been a great 4 years of Elise ownership, the car is so different to anything else, didn't quite expect that when I bought it. Have had some great runs, fun times together and weekends away from a load of people having no connection apart from owning the same type of car so will still see you all sometimes no matter what I end up with next.

Some before/after pictures, also got a painful video of the incident, might post that up sometime once things are sorted out.

If anyone has an interested in the car to repair after insurance write off, PM me as it surely could be back on the road for a huge amount less than £16K otherwise guess it will appear at one of the auctions in a few months time.

Sad to hear it was written off Ian. It is scary how easily they do get written off.
The main thing is you are non the worse following your off, hope you get a suitable replacement sorted soon.

Glad your ok and sorry to hear about the car not being fixed Ian, but not sorry that your thinking about getting a Porker. :D All of those early morning skinny dips at the Campaganzas have surely affected your head.

Hope your keeping well and that you can make it to Arisaig in a couple of weeks time, so we can catch up and have a few beers around the fire. No skinny dipping for me though.

Even though you don't have the Elise, keep in touch.

Glad your OK Ian.
Doesn't look like a lot of damage for £16K

good you're ok, sorry to hear the car isn't. Doesn't look like £16k of damage, would you not be tempted to buy at salvage price and repair?

The 111R went early last year, I did prefer my Rover engined Elise.

Lotus front clam almost £5k, rear one only very slightly cheaper so parts cost are pretty high for not much damage.
I'll ask about a settlement figure, parts price would reduce hugely but I'd still be paying normal rates for bodywork repair and respray so that would still add up.
Checking prices of 111s some of the advertised prices look really high, good for bargaining about current value.

5k for a clam, wow.

http://www.lotushardtops.com/clamshells have started making replacement s2 clams, about £1700 for brand new front.

If you dont fix it I might be tempted to, hope insurance make it all easy for you.

Sorry to hear about your off.

If you do venture into the realms of "porkdom" then happy to help out. Compiled a load of various dealers ages ago when I was looking at the 964. Their are so many about that you can afford to be very, very picky.
