Powder Coating

Post by haggis catcher » Wed Nov 22, 2006 8:26 pm

I had my Esprit wheels done there a few years ago. I was not impressed, having previously been in the aircraft painting trade for the RAF i new the correct method used for blasting the wheels before powder coating. I caught him blasting one of my wheels using the same cabinet that he blasted steel wheels, using grit instead of plastic beads. If you impregnate steel into alloy this causes distimalar corrosion. This will mean the wheels will corrode from inside. When i quizzed him on this, his reply was i did not know what i was talking about, and the RAF taught me wrong!!!!!!!! Me wisnea very happy. Plus the two of the wheels were covered in runs, and bubbling. Its a thumbs down from me i'm afraid.

My Elise soon after i bought it. It came with powder coated black wheels which MMC had done locally (Excellent job)

I spray painted the bare undertray and rear grills using Hammerite spray paint. The undertray lasted well but the grills needed a touch up.

I also replaced the silver LOTUS decals with black ones I had made up which looked miles better on a yellow car.

Well that gives some balance to the thread I guess!

Two years down the line, no sign of problems with mine, so we just have to go on our own experiences really.

Kind of like my view of MMC vs many others'.
