FF6 Tech Preparations

Post by Tom » Mon Jul 09, 2007 9:36 pm

Only 4 weeks to go before the trip and I've been thinking over the last few days about what's going to break on the car during FF. Given the length of time it takes to get hold of bits I'm going to start prepping what i'm taking along.

So:

Change engine oil before we go?
Also, people that have done these big trips before, do we need to take any consumables with us? Brake pads, ball joints etc etc

I expect Robin's already knows what he's taking, but not having done a big trip before, what do we need.?

Will 1 new set of tyres last the trip? obviously depends on driving styles etc but if we're gonna need tyres, would make sense to work out what might be available and where etc. I think ed and I are going to fit a new set of 888s for the trip.

on that point, robin, are your spare S1 wheels available for loan or are they on RLC duty

failing that, anyone want to lend us a set of S1 rims?

You need to give the car a complete service before you go - oil will be taking some punishing, not just w.r.t track days but also just driving in max heat soak conditions for hours at a time in the extended tut range - so start with new oil and filter, take at least 1L of oil for topping up.

It's common to lose both wheel bearings, ball joints and toe links on track days - much more so if you don't start with new ones. So check each joint and bearing properly before you go and replace anything dodgy.

I am actually thinking of running on AD07s for the week - I don't think R888's will last a week of hot France and hot track days - they'll go off after a dozen laps anyway, so road tyres will be worse, but once they're gone off, they won't shed rubber at quite the same rate.

Also the load on the wheel bearings and balljoints is less punishing that way.

BTW, I cannot remember whether you had the M16 bolt kit on your elise - if you didn't you really don't want to be running sticky tyres - you *will* kill the wheel bearings ...

I'm travelling light this year on tools, etc., as I'll have a pax as far as London anyway (and maybe the whole journey).

Cheers,
Robin

cheers for tips

RE M16s, you mean big hub bolts rather than small ones?? If so i have big ones fitted.

If fitting 888s then was going to do toelinks anyway. Have a set of BFGs with maybe 6mm all round. reckon they'll last (given the second half doesn't wear at all apparently)??

front wheel bearings were new maybe 2000miles ago (ish)

could we arrange a pre FF spanners??

failing that, when I make it round to your place to diagnose alt. belt, can we (you) supervise checking the balljoints etc?

cheers

Good.

Do you have them already? It's a fair amount of work to fit them.

Yes, they'll be fine I would imagine (Kelvin ran a set last year on his car and didn't wear them out).

Oh yes, I remember ...

I have very little spare time between now and FF6, so I couldn't commit to anything.

Yeah we did but i think we are getting 888s (for ali) on instead of the maxsports and keeping the t1s as road tyres. I think, as neil pointed out, that 888s will prob be overkill for us on your car Tom. Let me know if i can do anything to help. :thumbsup

Yup, I think 888's going on the shed - I thought the maxies a bit of a risk.

Welcome to borrow the spare wheels if needed. Swap tyres/use the T1R's etc. (sort out with Ed)

btw anyone want the old maxies? not sure of the wear.
I could always bring them down here - locals use them with petrol to deal with petty criminals... :flame
