So, how much £££ is too much??

Post by l1_cwb » Thu Jun 14, 2007 8:16 pm

Following on from my previous thread, i am curious how much people are willing to spend on trackdays.

Ive seen folk mention that £170 is a bit steep for a full days session. Also, as i found out, £200 is deemed off the chart for a sessioned day at Silverstone. With this in mind i'd guess that the £600+ price tag  of a 2-day Spa jaunt makes most members feel lightheaded?

So i ask the people - How much is too much for a trackday?

I value your opinions

I think it is dependent on too many things to make it as easy as " a trackday should cost X"

Some people here wouldnt flinch at spending £600 on 2 days at spa (I think the French Frolic a lot of dudes are going on is more than that?) and I can think of other things I need to spend £600 on just now.

For me, nipping up to KH for a £60/2 hours blast then home suits me fine at the moment. Gets it out the system.

If you were to lay off the sweeping statements and "I am considerably richer than yoww!" type comments you might avoid touching a few nerves :?

Again a look through the archives would reveal plenty of Spa, Nurburgring and European trips.

Personally I would tend not to go for sessioned days, not because of price or tracktime but because I would prefer to go on track when I feel like it and stay out as long as I or my car is happy to last.

I think I paid £175 for a day session at Donington in March on a Saturday, seems reasonable and would pay 150 -200 no probs for most good circuits. All in including travel, petrol, accommodation, beer money these trips become expensive which is why Knockhill is still an attractive option.

There is also always a large SE turn at KH and its good fun to be on track with your mates (handy for spanner help as well).

Dont know how much Cadwell is costing at the end of the month but if I wasn't going to be abroad I would be joining the rest of the SE group on yet another roadtrip, regardless of cost.

Nail on head. I would not drive 4 hours, blat about, then drive 4 hours home unless there was some banter and lager thrown in.

Cadwell is costing £160 for open pit in June. About 6 cars are going to that. From SE 10 cars are going on the French Frolic. That costs £500 per car. That gives 3 full days open pit, ferries and hotels with LOT. We can get spa through LoT for £200ish for open pit for a full day and ive also been to the nurburg, cadwell(5 se cars), teeside (25 SE cars) and donny(around 20 folk). Ive never done sessions for the same reason as Kenwood. For the majority as mentioned before its the enjoyment we get from doing a group trip as well as the doing the track itself. Some also travel south to support the racers in the LOTRDC championship. I, aswell as others im sure, would do alot more trackdays if the funds allowed. KH despite being expensive is close, and its a great place for newbies to learn from the more experienced crowd. Plus i dont have a massive fuel/hotel bill just to get there. :)

It is impossible to justify spending even one penny on driving your car in circles and possibly breaking it. Thus there can be no rational discussion around how much is too much - the market sorts itself out with commodity tracks where people will choose on price as much as anything (e.g. why pay one track day company 500 quid for a day at KH when you can pay 50 to one of the local clubs for much the same experience). However, for tracks like Spa it's all about the road trip - if you're going with pals and that's the weekend that fits in and you have the cash to spare, who cares how much it costs?

BTW, I reckon the average ring trip costs ITRO 1K all things considered - and I think a good trip to the ring+spa is worth spending an entire years track day budget on - two great tracks with lots of interesting cars and usually some pals from near and far to catch up with - the driving is secondary ;-)

BTW, to the other posters, I didn't read the OP as being the opening shot in a pissing contest - did I miss something? Seemed just like a question as to whether 600 is too much for a trip to Spa, no?

Cheers,
Robin

I'd just like to say - I certainly didn't start the thread as a pissing contest!!

I can't afford £600 for spa. If i could i'd go tho!!

Just wanted to find out the general consensus was. Thought it was a fairly simple question.

Seems ive made a few friends in my short membership (Kenny) HAHA!! :ROFL

With all conversations on forums much of the context can be lost and its easy to misinterpret what people say, the good thing about SE is most of us have met each other and are used to each others mannerisms and ways of putting things. What may seem offensive to a third party is accepted as banter between friends here.

So maybe I misinterpreted the OP assumptions about most SE’ers feeling lightheaded about paying for a trip to Spa or the comments on the other thread that I thought maybe could have been delivered in a less condescending manner.

As I said already a 5 min search through recent trips would have given the OP an idea of the level of commitment and friendliness you can expect to find at SE, and therefore assumptions that we were lacking in any sense of adventure beyond Knockhill wouldn’t have arose.

So apologies to our new member and be assured SE is a very friendly place to be.

I don't even want to think about how much is too much for a trackday - let alone a LOTRDC weekend.

Some of the outing we do sound like they have an opportunity to become epics - hopefully the Cadwell trip and FF6 are examples of that.

KH - awesome for being so close and alllowing you to catch up with mates :D

For the circuits down South I dont know if there is a too much limit. Most are good prices.

You've just got to take everything into consideration. Track price, plus fuel, plus food, plus accomodation if you need it etc...

There is a too much limit for Knockhill.

That too much limit is when you could book onto a decent track down South for the same price or not far off.
