UK Yota's are mapped for 95 RON are they not? 95 is the reccommended fuel in the manual, as long as its used within its limits the engine wont see any degredation from 95 as opposed to 98?

Correct me if I am wrong punters.
Nick on the Lotus BB wrote:Hi All, all fuel sold in the UK and the rest of Europe should meet a series of minimum standards defined by the authorities. As long as the fuel meets these standards it should be safe to use in any car which needs that Octane. The Elise is calibrated to run on 95RON fuel, which is the standard stuff you get at pretty much all the pumps. The knock control system in the car will allow additional ignition advance and therefore power if you choose to use 98RON , but the gains are pretty small. When it comes down to fine detail, like how well the car runs, starts etc, things get a lot more complicated as the quality, age and even temperature of the fuel can have a significant effect. I would generally advise sticking to well know brands if possible, and at the very least would avoid any low-turnover petrol sources like little garages in the back of beyond, where there are increased risks of water contamination and the like. Supermarkets are normally fine as they have a high fuel turnover, but because they often buy fuel on the "spot market" the precise source o the fuel can vary and hence one delivery may be inferior to another....
Cheers, Nick
Nick on the Lotus BB wrote:Hi All, yep, any lead in the fuel is bad news for the O2 sensors, so don't go there. There are rumours that the recently released 100 RON Shell Optimax recently released in Australia will be appearing here before long. If it does don't expect any performance gains with it as we have calibated the Toyota engines to 98RON and therefore the knock control system won't be able to eke any more power out of the extra 2 RON. Sorry! Nick
Nick on the Lotus BB wrote:Hi 2576, yep, the car is calibrated to run on 98 RON fuel, but is perfectly happy on 95RON as the knock control system is set to protect the engine with minimal loss of power. Running on 98 RON will not give a significant improvement in power and hence is unnecessary.

My car runs fine on 95, which is what I use on the road, but because it is a Jap spec Honda engine, it is actually mapped to give max power on 100RON, which is a pump fuel in Japan.

Tis therefore worthwhile using 99RON on the track. Also tuned Elises can benefit from higher Octane, and it is almost essential for Scoobys.

Just back half an hour ago, and grabbing a cuppa to warm up...

Really enjoyed today - First time I'd driven KH in over 2 years, and first track day in 18+ months... :D

Thanks to:

John Stewart for organising it

Mr Neale for pax laps in the posh red Fiat...

McKeann for scaring my stepson...(The words he's mental were used... )

Everyone for making me feel welcome - Haven't caught up with many of you for aaages, and it was like I'd never been away... :D :D :D

Apologies to:

Anyone I held up - I was getting a bit ragged at times too...Driving an Elise is different to a Caterham!

Mr Neale - I promised a spin in the shed at the end of the day, but the dreaded 'Refill' came on, and I didn't want to chance it...

Roll on the next one - Might actually drive a bit faster once I get into the swing of it!

You know you are cold when you actually think the heater in the VX is providing hot air

Wil, Jon and I popped up to see the day and i ended up leaving wishing i'd booked on. Very impressed with the turn out of machinery, and nice to see N1 TUT alive and well :D

Cheers to Jamie for the pax rides and hello to Dezzy 8)

What a great day. I was kept busy all day giving pax laps, and judging by the state of my rear tyres, i didnt dissapoint  Never mind, they'll do me for drifting round zandvoort, and i'll get new ones fitted before i do the ring.

One of the most fun parts of the day, was when Paul and I swapped cars. I had never driven a 340R before, and it was absolutley amazing, just a little bit more responsive and direct than the elise, and i'd really like to strip out my car and get it down to 700kg or under. Anyways, paul went out first, and by the time i got out of pits, he was coming up the straight behind me. It was like a scene from an F1 race, with a guy defending on cold tyres, from the "in the groove" competitor behind  We got into the swing of things, and was just starting to have a 3 way play with robin in the 135R when i remembered that i had given Paul my car with it sitting on refill, so we both pulled in, much to Robin's dissapointment

Good session as always with SIDC, had to give it up around 11:30 as the pads were disappearing fast on the front - and the MIL light reappeared. Good turn out today.

Indeed it was great - rain threatened but nothing much materialised in first 3 hours - then I went for fuel and decided to chuck on the new tyres as it pissed down while we were getting fuel, but by the time tyres were on, session had ended anyway :-(

Shame about the slightly ragged start, but by 10.00 that was all well and truly behind us and the next 2-3 hours passed without any serious stoppages.

At one point I did spend about an hour solid on track (naughty me) because I was really enjoying getting into the swing of the 135R. The car handled really well and the lack of power didn't seem too much of a hinderance, though as always with a grippy well setup car you think you need more power ... maybe just an extra 20-30 BHP would be nice ;-)

Had a good time chasing Tut and Neil - couldn't exactly keep up, but there was enough traffic to block them that I could catch them again, then spend another lap trying to keep them in sight :-)

There was only one really slow car out there, that I felt was perhaps too slow - I cannot suppose it was that much fun in the car, and they were slow enough to deserve a yellow flag really ... still they didn't hold you up, so only noticed them every 10 laps or so. Pretty much everyone else was trying and having fun in the process!

Funny thing was, I couldn't decide on a braking marker for Duffus - I normally don't bother with them, but I decided I needed one to work around to try and compress the braking zone a bit (which is normally extended by a short time coasting in my case) - all the other corners I don't have a problem with, but Duffus I struggle with - I always brake too much, and if I leave it later, I end up trail braking too much and causing the front end to complain.

What do others use?

Cheers,
Robin

I 'think' i use the braker marker on the right hand side, which is roughly halfway along the pit exit sliproad on the left hand side. Thats from 120mph though, so you would probably be later.

I had a good time too. Hope I didn't hold anyone up too much. Even though I was slow, I had lots of fun hauling the Fezza through the corners and then nailing the loud pedal on the straight bits.

I really enjoyed the pax With Paul. What a wonderful chassis!

Ed - I promise a pax next time - sorry!
