Hard/silver soldering (FALC)

Post by Rich H » Sun Jun 17, 2007 4:01 pm

I need to join steel to steel and can't be bothered with finding someone to weld it. has anyone every brazed or silver soldered? I have a small gas torch and they are only a couple of thin brackets onto a fuel rail (Brand new so no fuel in it!!)

Cheers

i've only ever welded mate. i wouldn't think it would be too hard a job although i'd have thought riveting it together may be easier

Don't really want to rivet into a fuel rail!!

Going to try silver solder if B&Q are still open...

I've did a bit of brazing before - the trick is to get solder material to pool and run it to the joint.

I take it that it's pretty damn hot to pool. I couldn't even get it to melt...

B&Q were shut despite their website saying different...

Did some brazing when I was serving my time (hell that makes me feel old, and I'm only 30!) you want it just melt and no more It takes a wee bit of practice. I would weld personally it's easier

Silver solder is a fab way of joining metals

The solder is quite pricey tho' and the flux is usually a powder type

For steel you need some firebricks for backing or similar and a blow lamp

Cut bits of solder and lay along the joints with flux powder then heat until the steel is cherry red and the solder runs into the joint, allow to cool

Jobs a good un
