clam revision??

Hi,

my 2005 111s is currently in getting a new clam (see avatar!) at Machargs Kilbirnie Street, Glasgow. They are telling me that the clam has been revised meaning that the access panels and top grilles look incorrect when fastened to the car. Meanwhile i'm sitting on my ar$e on a glorious night as i have no elise!

At first I excepted what they were saying but i have never heard of any clam revision. I am aware that the front clam is slightly different on 111r's.

Am i being told a pack of lies??

Sounds like they're talking sh*t and have confused your car with a 111R :(

There are several revisions of the S2 K-series front clam and no doubt the 111R is further different - call the Lotus parts department with your chassis number and they will tell you which clam part number you need - you can then call the repair shop, ask them to fax you the invoice/delivery note for the clam which will have the part number on it.

MMC_Parts_Man on here should be able to help ...

What difference are there with K series ones? AFAIK mine is identical to Mac's and EGOR.

For starters, early ones dont have a lip where the service panel would slot in before being screwed down - as a result the wee plastic prongs on the vent section of the service hatch break (like one of mine has) and flaps about at 90+ tuts.

I think that may be the only difference then, certainly nothing on mine that was different from the service manual description and it's dated 2001.

From the service manual:
Note that on some early cars, the outboard fixing was positioned further inboard, with an adjustable height rubber buffer supplementing panel stability. Panel replacemen on these cars would require fitment of the later type panel and adjustable outboard fixing.

The 111R differences are easy to spot - the central section is thinner (in depth) and the black grill passes through underneath it. You should be able to fit your hands through underneath the central section when on the car (the radio ariels are taped on under there). The access panels are higher to allow room for ABS stuff. The access panels only have one screw, not 3.

If it's dramatically different like I've described, then it sounds like they've sent a 111R clam.

Yeah, but the original X/Y plate models had IIRC three variants - nothing to do with styling, just production changes. My early S2 had an off road experience, and it needed a new clam, but I taped it up for a year or so. Later, Malcolm (greyrigg) hit a deer and also needed a new clam - his car was a later model than mine - when his clam arrived, it was the wrong one - Lotus sent a replacement, but the old clam was never collected - eventually they said to skip it, and I ended up with it - now when that clam was fitted to my car, it didn't fit all the old fixings and so I ended up with not just new clam but new grills and stuff, and the headlights weren't a great fit (something to do with a change in the rubbers rather the lights IIRC). Hence I think there must have been at least two if not three minor revisions of the early S2 clam.

They all look the same, though :-)
