Engine problems - help please

I drove home tonight from work and all was well with the car.
Two hours later went to go out in the car and it started fine but as soon as I pressed the acelerator down the revs went down and the car sounded very lumpy. The Engine Management Light came on and has stayed permanently and solidly lit. I checked the oil and it was down at minimum so I put some oil in. Left her for a while and restarted it only to find the symptoms are exactly the same.
Any ideas please?
The manual does not tell you a whole lot - should I drive it to a garage or not.

if the MIL light is triggered it will have recorded a fault code. This may alloow you to see what the issue is at a stroke. You will need an OBDII reader and the software to read it though.
If you are near a friendly with the diagnosis equipment thats what I'd go with first.
Might be checking the induction if you have a kit fitted incase its soaking or dry as a bone??
Taking guesses tough get the ECU diagnosis on it

Thanks Andy I don't have an induction kit fitted. Will try and find someone local with a computer to check it out.

Woody I really appreciate you popping along to Stewarton to see if you could help. All being well I will get something sorted tomorrow and I can still make TT2007. Fingers crossed.
