Bearing grungle

Post by Tim S » Thu May 31, 2007 12:57 pm

I have a new grungle!!

Following 'Ring & Spa trip over the weekend :D :D :D , car was mostly fine - but it does have a new noise: sounds like some kind of bearing, and is definitely road (not engine) speed related.

However, I don't think it's a wheel bearing - 'cos it isn't any worse going round corners and I couldn't feel any play with the wheels off the ground. Sounds loudest when the car's v hot, but being driven v slowly (especially when pulling into car park after being on track/motorway) but it doesn't do it all the time.

Is there an in-board drive shaft bearing? Do these ever go?

Any other ideas?

Thanks

Tim

could be lots of things. I have had whines from gearbox, brake discs rubbing, backing plate on discs rubbing, bearing collapsed but showed no signs of wear etc etc.

which end, front or rear??

Back, it sounds like.

How did you find out a bearing had collapsed if it had no signs of wear??

when i took it out it split in 2 peices in my hand

seriously though, the wheel was moving so much under load that it was fouling the hub, but there was no play when jacked up

It is known for bearings to have gone, but have no noticeable wheel wobble. It's harder to tell on the rear due to the driveshafts etc.

If a bearing has gone it should get louder over time :D and you'll hear it when cornering and the weight is on that corner. Bear in mind that if both rear bearings are going then it's much harder to tell as the noise can be constant through all corners!

But if it's intermittent it doesn't sound like a bearing
