S1 Steering rack

Post by Titanium S1 111S (gla) » Fri May 11, 2007 12:00 pm

Where from, re-con, how much and how difficult?

Steering rack is in a bad way and will need doing for the MOT so recon I might as well get on with it. Recommendations about where to get one and advice about fitting appreciated.

Should I look at getting it re-conned or are re-cons more “Conâ€

Kenny Brown rebuilds them with metal bits to replace the plastic bits that always fail. Pretty sure there's a contact on here if you search for him or google it.

I seem to remember that someone may actually have sourced these bits themselves and if so, you could probably rebuild the rack yourself, but cannot remember who it was.

Anyway, the biggest PITA is removing the rack!

Thanks Robin.

Have you done it? Has anyone else?

Haven’t even had a look at it yet but remember thinking that it looked pretty difficult when I was last working on the front suspension. :?

Top tips greatly appreciated if anyone has any.

They are made by...

...I'm told. You probably could get the parts from them, plus they do a new gear (8 tooth instead of 7) that makes the steering quicker.

Craig and Alan replaced mine a few months ago on N1 TUT with a new one that I got off eBay.

It was no problem for two guys who knew what they were doing. The problem with the re-build by Kenny Brown is that he only replaces those outer rods, the likelihood is that you have wear in the rack and pinion assembly inside the casing, which means a replacement.
