Clunk

Post by Novice Racer » Wed Apr 18, 2007 8:41 pm

Been doing this for a couple of weeks now.

Just as taking off, or during firm braking, there is a loud metallic sounding clunk from the rear passenger side, low down. I can feel this vaguely through the chassis of the car in my seat. I can generate the sound by also braking firmly in reverse and when initially starting to reverse.

It seems to sometimes come on either at the beginning or end of braking. However, it always occurs just before the car takes off, rather than as the rear suspension compresses as acceleration begins. I would say that it occurs 8 in every 10 times and is not related to temperature or journey time (happens from beginning to end of a journey).

No abnormal sounds heard at idle or at any sort of steady speed, regrdless of how uneven the road surface.

Sounds like it is coming from the region of the suspension, but really not sure. Defo from the left rear lower back of the car.

Any ideas?

Was thinking brake pads shifting but it's the fronts that do that....

Jack the car up and check each wheel - Greg and I will be in the big garage tomorrow night - feel free to bring it over and put it in the little garage and check it out.

More than likely it's what rich says, the pads hitting the top/bottom of the calipers, but should check it out in case it's a drive shaft joint or something else hanging off (really not very likely, though).

Cheers,
Robin

Many thanks Robin.

I will be working until 10pm tonight. Is it too late to arrive at 1015 or are you two planning to work late?

I might like you to have a seat in the car and have a listen, if you are still around that late.
