hiya,
A quick question for you, in my 96 S1 when I brake the backlight in the stack dims, is this a common thing? I've a month to go of my warranty left so I though I better ask
cheers

Yes, it's a common thing.
I think it is actually caused by the offset in ground potential rather than the more obvious drop in supply voltage.
It may be indicative of a poor ground strap at either battery-to-chassis or chassis-to-gearbox.
You can test out this theory by getting a jump lead (or two end-to-end), clip one end to the negative terminal on the battery, clip the other end to a good earth on the engine or gearbox.
With the lead in place, see if there is any change in the amount the LEDs dim by when the brake pedal is pressed.
Cheers,
Robin

Cheers Robin,
My battery is goosed so I'm ordering one up tomorrow, as a result the cobra alarm thinks I'm always stealing the car

. I'll check the earth strap at the battery as I never noticed it before until I had to remove the leads to charge the battery
On a side issue, does anyone know wht battery I should order? Obviousl one with a handle is preferable

Campbell got a stunner recently from somewhere in his 'hood - I am sure he'll pop along in a minute and remind us all (or search the list for posts by campbell that relate to batteries).
You want an 063 IIRC ...

Hello!
Hunters in Linlithgow.
http://www.hunterslinlithgow.co.uk/
£27.50 supplied and fitting including vodka and tonic. Same if just supplied mind you. I only took the supply as don't know if they have fitted an Elise battery before! Type 63 as Robin says.
Depending on where you are, I may be able to collect and shuttle to some convenient point to save you braving the wilds of deepest West Lothian

Let me know.
As for dimming backlight, mine does that too. I'll try the Robin Trick when I get a minute, however the man is on the money again cos he has already spotted that one of my earthing stacks looks a bit shot...these Jedis, what are they like!
