Stack Rev Counter

I think that the rev counter on the Stack unit of my S1 111s is posessed. It is behaving very randomly and generally not reflecting the revs that it should be. Sometimes it moves, other times it sits fixed at 5000rpm.

Murrays reckon that the only remedy is a replacement, coming in at around £1200 (!!).... Thanks, but no.

Has anyone experienced anything similar, or know of how best to fix it? Any suggestions that don't involve me having to sell my house gratefully received.

Have you tried resetting it!?

- Turn off the ignition
- Open the driver's door (yes, really!)
- Press and hold the trip-meter reset button
- Whilst still holding the reset button turn the key in the ignition to the second position (just before the engine turns
The Stack will then wind both needles back to below the zero position, and the LCD will show the software revision number. Once it's gone through the motions your speedo should then read true!

From my research, this seems to work on all versions of the Elise, including those with Stack and Shurlock instruments.

Find out from robin where the main ECU - stack plug is and check that out... Could be a duff connector. The Tacho is driven by the ECU IIRC.

When you first switch on the car the needles should both wind backwards a bit and bump off the end stops (pegs) down below 0RPM/0MPH. If you switch yours off with the needle and 5K RPM and then keep turning ignition on/off, does the needle work its way down to 0 or stay stuck at 5K.

If the needle moves then the stepper motor is OK and chances are you are getting duff pulses from the ECU or no pulses.

If the needle doesn't move (or only moves sometimes) then the needle is stuck or the stepper motor is duff; either way you need to remove the stack to fix it. If it's the needle slipping on the stepper motor drive then some glue might work. If the motor or motor drive circuits have gone, you're looking at a new stack probably, or a Halfrauds bolt on rev counter.

I usually find when my rev counter is reading 5K (or more) when it should not be, it's something to do with a lack of traction for the driven tyres

I have a spare Stack that we could fit to see if its the dash unit or the input.
