think it's that bloody boot cable...

Stopped on my way to work this morning to get a bottle of water out of the boot to clean the screen with.

Boot just pings back up when I try to latch it. The pull side in the driver's door seems ok, it doesn't seem loose or anything.

I fiddled about trying to jam the latch in the locked position but in the end aborted, went home and took another car.

It was minus 6 (so the Skoda-beast told me) so I wonder if that had anything to do with it?

Suggestions? If it's the cable, how do I find out? How much is, and where do I get, a cable? Is it a pain in the airse to fit?

Cheers
John

John the boot cable will need oiled at the door jam.
The metal to metal here tends to rust a little with the result that the pull handle does not return and hence holds the latch in the open position.
While you are fiddling tie a piece of cord to thr release mech and feed it down into the D/S rear wheel area so that if the cable ever breaks you can releas tyhe boot lid easily.

ok, that sounds a bit more promising.

I managed to prise the latch into the locked position with a screwdriver but as soon as I let go, it pinged back to open position which ties in with the door side being jammed.

I undid the little cable gripper at the boot end and pulled the cable out completely from the door end. Then I poured a load of WD 40 down the boot end until it ran out of the door end (WD=Water Dispersant  ) I then cleaned up the boot cable and greased it with white grease (Lithium, the grease not my medication) and fed the cable back in. It is now as smooth as Shugs sales patter

[Warning: there is no garuantee it will ever go back in]

the wonder of WD came to the rescue yet again!

Stephen, I looked to get a cord tied onto the mechanism but it looks damned akward to attach!! Did you drill a hole in the bracket or did you tie a cord round the cable stop? Did you bore out the hole in the wheel arch where the cable is to allow a cord in there too?

Cheers

If you are going to fit a standby cable it would be worth using a bit of bike brake cable, the catch is pretty stiff. I would be inclined to put it above the wheel arch liner taped to the clam probably. It's not like you are going to need it very often (Hopefully!) I would also drill the catch, make it more secure. There would be nothing more annoying that the boot cable snapping and your stand-by coming off in your hand!

I left it hanging above the wheel arch liner & from memory looper the cable round the mechanism. I'll have a look when the rain goes off!
