Hi all,

Can someone give some advise please.

Have a "10" plate 1.6 Elise.

Car had a new radiator fitted by Murray motors, last September (approx).

The water temperature seems to sit around 88°C to 91°C, doesn't matter if around the town or a fast run on the back roads..... until yesterday, got stuck in the most horrendous traffic on the M8, the temperature got to 98°C when i jumped to the hard shoulder and let her cool, after 20 minutes the traffic was moving a little better, well it was moving at least and i continued with the temperature not going above 92°C, anyone know when the fans should be cutting in? As they hadn't cut n at the 98°C!!!!

The run home was fine, M77 and a "quick" run down the back roads to home and she never went above 91°C

Any advise would be great.

Cheers - ferg

Doubt I’d be worried, hot day, low airflow. Don’t think the fans really start to go at it till 102 which will bring it back down to mid 90s

As above, nothing to worry about. Fan cut-in is definitely higher than 98C.

I remember panicking the first time I was stuck in traffic on a hot day too.

As mentioned I'm sure the fan kick-in point is at 101/102, remember the coolant in your engine won't boil at 100C, it's more like 106 IIRC so it was in no danger at 98C.

Just wait till you get the steam pouring out the radiator on a coldish wet day, you’ll sh*t yourself then.

Start it idling at home while you wash it and listen for the fan cutting in. Around 100 ish.

If it does boil up, start with fan fuse

Thanks for the replies fellas, i guess i was panicking.

It is a new radiator as after a month of ownership the end tanks let go so i guess i am fine, i was just a little worried that the fans hadn't come on.

The coolant's meant to be good to 120. At 110 the temperature readout will start flashing, and at 111 it'll beep too, so 98 is nothing to worry about.
